La lucha libre profesional japonesa está cambiando para siempre (¿qué pasó?)

New Japan Pro Wrestling has dominated Japan’s wrestling scene for decades, but now, smaller promotions are starting to gain ground. STARDOM, AJPW, NOAH, DDT, Dragon Gate and BJW are all having a turnaround year in 2025, and it might be thanks to an unlikely source. So is Japan due for a pro wrestling renaissance? And can any other promotion displace the now-struggling NJPW?

  1. I resigned back up to Stardom World mainly because of that Saya Kamitani vs. Tam Nakano match. I've been going back through some of their shows and they have been delivering for so damn long, it was worth it. I am gonna sign back up for WrestleUniverse soon enough.

  2. I think a big part of Stardom's growth (beyond Saya's tv show apperances giving desperately needed new exposure) is how easy they've made it to be a casual fan. Unlike most promotions, they've prioritized visibility over immediately locking people into a subscription. The service is still there, but they're fine with fans who just watch on youtube and buy a ticket when they want to go to an event. Some will eventually become core fans who subscribe, others won't, and that's okay. They recently streamed a full show with a title for title main event for free on youtube after it sold out, and they regularly post big PPV matches not long after they air. They also produce lots of high effort original content on there and live stream free matches regularly. I think NOAH is also okay at using their youtube channel, not sure about others.

I think its one of the reasons MLW draws surprisingly good houses in America despite not having a tv deal, because they upload all their stuff for free on youtube.

  3. Stardom is so good. That I just watch the one event every so often and I feel like I'm getting value for money. Even though I pay almost every month for an all-you-can-watch subscription.

But CyberFight and Wrestle-Universe is UNBEATABLE BANG FOR YOUR BUCK PRO WRESTLING! There is not better deal than what CyberFight can offer the average consumer. for just ¥1298 (TAX INCLUSIVE) rounded up to ¥1300 is just $8.70 tax included A MONTH.

and for that $8.70 you get 10 different wrestling promotions 5 All MALE promotions (NOAH GANBARE PRO, MICHINOKU PRO REALZERO1 BASARA) 4 ALL FEMALE promotions (TJPW ,SENDAI GIRL, MARIGOLD DREAM STAR FIGHTING, MARVELLOUS) and 1 MIXED GENDER BUT ALL CHAOS promotion in DDT

THAT'S 10 PROMOTIONS FOR JUST $8.70 A MONTH tax inclusive. all with the great wrestling and endless hours of content to watch.

And I would say at least six of those promotions that being NOAH, TJPW, DDT, MARIGOLD, SENDAI GIRLS, MICHINOKU PRO. is some of the best man or woman wrestling You're gonna see anywhere on this planet Earth.

And DDT is like the gift that doesn't stop giving it's a buffet, it's a circus of all types of wrestling. There is not a one show that is not entertaining as balls.

SUBSCRIBE TO WRESTLE-UNIVERSE TODAY AND CHECK IT OUT! I can almost guarantee you YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED! or feel short changed.

  4. Big Japan definitely isn’t on the rise, especially after Sekimoto going freelance. Very bad attendance and the roster is as thin as ever. Plus lighttubes will stop being produced in 2027 which could hurt their identity. I still think 2003-13 was the prime for wrestling alternatives in Japan, MMA hurt the scene and it was much easier for the small groups to scale up while the big groups had trouble scaling down.

  5. BJW is not having any type of comeback or growth period, if anything they might close once Sekimoto retires. A lot of their biggest stars either left wrestling entirely, or left for other promotions (FREEDOMS, BASARA, KTDan, the J-Indies at large). Despite making it to 30 years, there's not much optimism currently.

The same could be said for NOAH, but with CyberFight backing them they can't push forward. A few more years of T2000X cannibalizing itself might change that, though.

  6. I'd love for AJPW to get big again because of the match quality of 90's King's Road. I'd also hate for AJPW to get big again because of the wrestler safety of 90's King's Road.

We're gonna get the first 8-star match ever…but at what cost? 😅

  7. I agree that NJPW was the undisputed leader of puroresu. But in the 90's, it was all AJPW. Then the split happened and it became NOAH until Misawa died. Then NJPW started gaining momentum and by 2010, became the leader. Thats just how i see the history of pro wrestling in Japan. Thats why NJPW had such a big downfall from late 90s to mid 2000s
