Before Trump, tariffs were a way to keep domestic producers competitive in the domestic market against foreign products by adding a tariff tax making the foreign products the same or slightly higher price than the domestic products. In the free-market system consumer choice is often influenced by cost, national pride and advertising that would say buy domestic instead of foreign. Because of Trump, even if there is a slight opening of the foreign markets to US products, he has made US made products toxic that most of the foreign consumers would rather buy the higher price non-US products than cheaper US products. Even long-time allies of the US would rather buy non-US products or other foreign products costing higher because of Trump’s politicizing tariffs against them. Trump has thrown the GOP MAGA farmers, ranchers and domestic producers under the bus.
