China has warned its citizens against traveling to Japan as it escalates a backlash over comments by the country’s prime minister about the island of Taiwan.
Chinese airlines have recorded about 491,000 cancellations of tickets to Japan since Saturday – roughly 32 per cent of their total bookings to the typically popular destination.
The percentage of flights affected skyrocketed to 82.14 per cent on Sunday and 75.6 per cent on Monday.
Meanwhile, there has been a significant shift in Chinese travel plans to Japan, leading to substantial impacts on the tourism sector.
The company, which mostly relies on Chinese clients, specialises in large group tours for cultural, corporate, and government exchanges.
But as Yu explained, many have become vulnerable to the two powers’ fragile relationship.
The dispute could deal a blow to Japan’s economy, as Beijing has advised its citizens not to travel there.
Chinese form the largest number of all tourists to Japan, accounting for nearly a quarter, official figures show.
Tourism-related stocks in Japan plunged on the news.
