So what should be done?
In a positive world, Japan should have diplomacy, dialogue, and relations with all of its neighbors including China its biggest trade partner, and also North Korea. Because the relationship has always been lukewarm at its best points, untrustworthy, need a balance, diplomacy, understanding, with firmness for its own geopolitical needs & wants. Then there is Japan's overlord Uncle Sam with his needs & wants. For China, obtaining Taiwan would symbolize the end of Centuries of Shame, Xi accomplishing it would put him in the Pantheon of greatest Sino leaders. Japan would then become geographically trapped, suffocated. Taiwan, Japan, Phills, N&S Korea are vassals being caught in between the Thucydides Trap.

Japan and USA have defense agreement signed after WW2 with USA protecting Japan in the event of a war. US set up troops and bases in Japan after WW2 ended. Now, Japan 's right wing government under takaichi adminstration plans to drag USA into a war with China. Trump knew about Takaichi's intention. He remained silent throughout, not even Rubio the USA war secretary has made any statement so far. The only thing trump mentioned was "some of our allies are not our real friends. They leech on us more than China does." This old fox knew what game Japan is playing.
Why is japan creating all these tensions? Japan's economy, military, technology is all under USA's control since its surrender in 1945. Japan under Takaichi plans to restore Japan back to it's pre-ww2 glory. It wants Nuclear weapons and remove all USA's controls and be equal footing with Americans. The japanese claimed they were not defeated by the Chinese nor the Americans in the WW2. It was the 2 nuclear bombs they surrendered to. Japan will never forget the humiliation by USA. A war with USA involved will get the USA busy and loosen it's grip on Japan.

China may destroy tokyo in a hail of hypersonic first, as a warning and escalate further depending on Japan's reaction.
