GRAND SUMO: Day 13 of the November 2025 Tournament – GRAND SUMO Highlights
[Music] [Music] Welcome back to the November tournament. We are at day 13. Yokozuna, one of three men tied for the lead along with fellow Yokozuna Hoyu and Shinskiwake Anishki. Wonos and Anishki will face off today. So the leaderboard will change. Here is that leaderboard. Onoto Hu and Anishki tied for first place. One step behind is rank and fo Mashid Toki Hayate. Another packed house at the Fukoka Kokai Center. We begin with Gonoyama and May. Goyama delivers a big hit at the Tati, but has a hard time following it up. May will begin the new year in judo, but he is just happy to be back in action after back surgery. Off they go. Gonoyama pushing to the neck and chin of Meay, but Meay fights back. Gonoyama continues to pressure Meay and pushes him down. That’s an Oshihi frontal push down. Gonoyama improves to seven and six. [Applause] May with only one win since his return from injury. [Music] Next up are Oomi and Tommo Kaz. This is a first time meeting in Makunuchi, but they are familiar with each other, having fought four times in Judio. Both men with losing records. Hitting and shifting is Oumi and he pushes out Tommo Kaz just in time. Looked like Tommo Kaz got messed up with the cameraman, but he’s okay. His record is not Tommoaz with Mak Koshi. Both men at five and eight. [Applause] Here are Shishi and Sadano Umi. [Applause] 38-year-old Sadoi has lacked energy. He has a 3 and9 record. Shishi at 5 and seven. His feet have been all over the place. Coming in at an awkward angle was Shishi. Sadumi grabs the head and neck area of Shishi and picks up a win. That is an unusual Kimarite Kubi Hinedi. A head twisting throw by Sadani. [Applause] Here’s the slow motion replay. Sadumi going up top to the head area of Shishi for an unusual Kubi Hinedi. On the dojo now, Asa Koru and Cotto Sho. Asaaku six and six. Cotto Sho 7 and five and going for a Kachi Koshi. Stepping to the side was Asa Ku. But Cotto Sho was ready for that. A bit of rhythm in his body. Cotto Shoo. But then Asa Cordu gets an inside position and shoves out Cotto Sho. It’s an oshidashi for Asa Cordu. Both men now at seven and six. [Applause] Here are Dio and Chio. Down they go to the Shikkiris DO with good extension and he flattens and Oshihoshi frontal push down by Disho and that gives him a Kachi Koshi. Gio with the same record, eight and five. [Applause] Here’s Shaano Umi and Toby Zadu. Shaano Umi could be back in Judio in January. He’s 3 and N at Magashida 15. Toby Zadu not displaying his usual high-flying sumo. [Music] They paw at each other. Hard to say who has the advantage at this point. [Music] It’s a Tupati battle at the center and then Toby Zadu slips his left arm inside and uses that for the Yori Kitty force out victory. Tobiizu avoiding Mak Koshi today. He improves to six and seven. Shanoi three and 10. Here are Midori Fuji and Mitakeumi. Midori Fuji will look to gain inside leverage despite his small size. Mitakeumi trying to avoid a second straight Mak Koshi. Midori Fuji indeed plows inside. He has a right hand inside on Mitakumi. Meanwhile, Mitakumi using the left hands to block the right arm of Midori Fuji. Neither man with a clear advantage at the moment. Mitake Umi edging Midori Fuji to the edge. Midori Fuji runs out of room. As a result, it’s Mitaki who wins by Oshidashi frontal push out. He improves to six and seven. Midori Fuji falls to that same record. Next up are Duden and Kim Bzan. Both are five and seven. It’s rather surprising that Kim Bzan has an 0 and5 record against Duden. Kim Bzan looking for his first win against Duden. Off to a good start as Kim Bzan moving straight back, but Uden fights back. And now Duden seems to have the advantage with that left hand outside grip. He’s better on the moashi than Kim Bzan is. Kim Bzan caught upright and Uden wins by Yori Kiti. So Nuden continues his dominance over Kim Bzan. Now 6 and 0 head-to-head [Music] on the dojo. Now it’s Ichi Yamamoto and Roga. They have an identical eight and four. Ichiamamoto is on a fivematch winning streak. Roga has won four in a row. Kichi Yamamoto coming in at a low angle and moves back. Roga circles around and now Roga has a right hand inside on Ichi Yamamoto like the previous match. There’s one Niki whoa is better on the moashi and that would be Roga. But look at Ichi Yamoto. Even though he’s not a moashi fighter, is able to force out Roga, winning by Yori Kitty. So, Ichiamoto picks up his ninth win with that force out. Here’s Fujino Kawa and Abby. This is a first time meeting in any division. Junior, you made it. Size does matter, but so does speed, technique, and determination, which Fujinoa has. [Music] Fast start once again by Fujinoa, but he’s getting thrust back by Abby, but Abby loses his balance at the edge. So, Fujino Okawa able to maneuver around Abby and win by Tsukio Toshi thrust down. [Music] In addition to that, Fujino Kawa picks up his Kachi Koshi. [Applause] So in a first time meeting, Fujinoa uses his speed, his agility, and his technique to defeat Abi. This is our first highlight match. It’s between Yoshino Fuji and Toki Hayate. They have never fought before. Toki Hayate the surprise. May my gashida Yoshino Fuji the ex college star. [Music] Kind of a soft tati there. It’s a body battle. Now they lock up and it’s Toki Hayate who moves back Yoshino Fuji. But Yoshino Fuji has a secure grip and he uses that left hand inside grip to win by Yodi Kittini for south. So, Yoshino Fuji as you would expect from uh Blue Chip X College. Lishi was able to come back after being forced backwards initially by Toki Hayate. This was a really exciting matchup. Look at Yoshino Fuji on one leg, but he’s able to maintain his balance and eventually force out Tokihayate. Here’s another look. Yoshuji on that right foot showing excellent balance and takes back Tokihayate. Next up are Hiad Umi and Chudano Umi. They began their Osmo careers at the same time. Chudanoi is 7 years older because he went to college whereas Hi Umi entered sumo after junior high school. Hirado Umi moving into Churano Umi’s side of the dojo and then shoves him out. One-way traffic there as Hiomi wins by Oshidashi push out. Just his fourth win this tournament. Judani falls to six and seven. Here’s Onoatu and Wakamoto Haru. Onatsu one loss away from his third straight Mak Koshi. Meanwhile, Wakamoto hadu has a level six and six record. [Music] They ram into each other. Wakamoto Hadu with the left hand inside grip and he uses that strong fundamental sumo by Wakamoto Hadu as he wins by force out Yori Kitty. He’s up to seven and six and goes for a Kachi Koshi tomorrow. On Katu with the third straight Mak Koshi. Here’s Kirishima and Atami Fuji. Kishima with four straight victories and an eight and four score. Atami Fuji at seven and five going for Kachikoshi right here. Atami Fuji surges forward but Kirishima is able to deflect Atami Fuji’s initial surge. Now Kirishima [Music] with a deep inside grip with the right hand. Atami Fuji is much heavier than Kirishima but he is caught at an upright position and look at Kirishima flex his muscles. He briefly lifted up all 192 kilograms of Atami Fuji and wins by Yodi Kitty force out. He’s up to 9 and four on the door. Now it’s Tamawashi and Waka Taka Kag. [Music] This man currently six and six at Mashidto 1. 41y old Tamawashi with a five and seven record. Coming in very low is Waka Taka Kag and then Tamawashi takes him straight backwards and Oshidashi push out win for the 41y old. [Music] Tamashi now tied with Takanohana for 10th place in most Makuchi victories. This is Tamawashi’s 71st Top Division victory. Here it is in real time. Next up, Haku Oho and Uda. It’s the raw power of Hakuo against the finesse and flexibility of Uda. Hakuo looks fierce, but his record is not. Four and eight. Uda at six and six. Uda coming in lower than Hakuo. Can he use that angle of attack? Sure can. Smooth sailing for Uda as he wins by Uate Dashi Nag in English. That’s a pulling over arm throw. Uda at seven and six. One win away from Kachikoshi. Hakuo 4 and nine. [Applause] Moving really smoothly today is Uda. He has a very nice angle of attack as you can see here and then gets the left hand outside grip and uses that for the dashag blocking Hakuo’s initial surge and he gets Hakuoho upright and he follows that up smoothly with the left hand outside grip. Next up, Nishiki Fuji and Takayasu. Kosubi Takayasu at five and seven. Mashid 15. Nishiki Fuji is moving way up the Ozumo food chain today to face Takayasu. Off they go. Nishiki Fuji. putting the pressure on Takayasu. But Takayasu is much bigger. He won’t go out easily. A bunch of by Nishiki Fuji. Can he keep up this pace? Nope. It’s Takayasu who slaps Nishiki Fuji down. And that’s a Hataki Ki and Takayasu is up to six and seven. It was a flurry of by Nishiki Fuji, but he was unable to take Takayasu out of the ring and eventually it looked like Nishiki Fuji tired out. And that’s when Takayasu slapped him down. A valiant effort by Nishiki Fuji as he keeps thrusting Takayasu. But Takayasu has a big body, so he’s able to hold his position and eventually slap down Nishiki Fuji. Here are Takosho and Shodai. [Music] [Applause] [Music] Takenosho when he’s at his best, he has a stout pushing attack. Shai already with a Mak Koshi in this November tournament. Nice tati by Takanos and he follows it up smoothly with the push out. Oshidashi win for Takosho. That was a sharp tatia by Takanosho. The kusubi. [Applause] [Music] Nice angle of attack along with the power that we’re used to seeing from Takosho and Shodai has no response. Here are OMA and Oho. Two Rickshi with poor records. Aashida for Ooma is three and nine. Oho a 4 and8 losing tournament. So he will have to give up his sekiwake rank. They slam into each other. You heard that. Oho wrapping up the upper body of Ooma. And it’s complete domination by Ohho. He wins by Yikitti frontal force out. [Applause] Oho up to five and eight. [Music] That’s one of Ohho’s better matches this tournament. He starts off strong and then wraps up the upper body of Ooma and then keeps moving forward eventually winning by Yori. Here’s a different angle. A one-sided win for Ohho. Our second bout of the day between co-leader Hoo and Oi Koto Zakura. [Applause] This has been a streaky series. H Shu has run off 10 straight wins. Then Cotto Zakura won five in a row. Overall, Hoo leads 14-8. [Applause] Hodu bouncing back nicely from that day six Hanka loss. Cotto Zakura playing spoiler. Off they go. Fast start with a right hand inside, left hand outside but cannot finish off Zakura. Poto Zakura holds his ground. Now it becomes a serious grappling battle. Hoo trying to press forward but Cotto Zakur is able to get him to the edge. Now Hoo has the advantage and he forces out Moto Zakura. A Yori Kitty frontal force out. What a great match. They went back and forth, back and forth, and eventually it was H Shu who’s the winner. He’s up to 11 and two and maintains his share of first place. At the start, Hooy had the advantage as he moves Cotto Zakura to the edge. But that’s where Cotto Zakura, even though he’s caught upright, is able to use his bigger size and heavier weight to hold his ground. And then right here, he looked like he might take Hoo over the edge, but Hoo fights back and then has a right arm inside and uses that for victory. Our final big match on day 13 pits two co-leaders, Ono Sto and Anishki, both at 10 and two. Anishki has never defeated Onoto. In fact, He looked overwhelmed by Onosato in their two previous meetings. He’ll have to avoid getting shoved straight back by the Yokozuna. So, of course, the loser will fall out of a share of first place. Anishki with a left hand outside grip, but he gets taken back by Ono Sto. It was close, but clearly Ono Sato stayed on his feet longer than Anishki did. It’ll be clear with a slow motion replay, but Alishki now 0 and3 against Ono Sto. Anishki briefly with that left hand outside, but once he jumps, that’s when the match was over. Once Anishki left his feet, that means he was defeated. So, it was closer than their two previous meetings, but Ono Santo is the winner. He and fellow Yokouna Poyu tied for the lead. Anishki one step behind. A reminder, NHK World Japan will broadcast live coverage of Day 14, Saturday, November 22nd from 5:10 p.m. Japan time. Thanks for watching Gran Sumo Highlights. [Music]
