Making a "me-too" model that is 80-90% as good as a frontier model (like with DeepSeek) shouldn't ever have been taken as meaningful. Doing so simply follows a set of procedures. You just need to have GPUs and no immediate concern of profit (notably this isn't a concern if your goal is not business or AI development, but soft power projection). Thus, it represents nothing in terms of innovation and tech prowess. One thing that seems overstated here is the impact of GPU restrictions on the matter. In terms of large parameter LLM training for DeepSeeks, this generally is insignificant. With the models they made, not much is changed by whether they take one month less due to having access to better chips. (Not to say it isn't significant in other scenarios).
DeepSeek stealing US AI data to build the basis of its app …… is anyone not suprised?
I wrote a book in which the CCP enslaves its Turing machines. It seems they've already laid the groundwork. And the PRC doesn't have a human rights record. It has a historically preeminent butcher's bill.
