According to preliminary data released on Monday, Japan’s economy grew by 0.2 percent annually in the last quarter of 2025, bouncing back from a contraction in the previous quarter but far below expectations of +1.6 percent growth. Disappointing? But there is another perspective. Annual GDP growth depends on ever increasing production and consumption, which means extracting more raw materials, burning more energy, and generating more waste. On a planet with finite resources and ecological limits, an economy that must grow every year inevitably collides with the boundaries of the environment.
Measuring a country's GDP is meaningless. Neither is voicing personal opinions about it to make news. It does not reflect the lot of the man-in-the-street.
