Trump says he expects Japan to ‘step up’ in war effort against Iran

During a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Thursday (Mar 19), US President Donald Trump urged Japan to “step up” in protecting the Strait of Hormuz.

“We don’t need anything from Japan or from anyone else but I think it’s appropriate that people step up. In the case of Japan, I hear they get more than 90 per cent of their oil through the Strait (of Hormuz) so that’s a reason to step up,” Trump said.

His remarks come after he earlier criticised countries, including Japan, for not joining his call to help protect the Strait of Hormuz.
