Japan’s Vending Machines are Changing — Here’s What’s Happening
Japan’s Vending machines are starting to disappear. Japan is famous for having one of the highest densities of vending machines in the world, but that is starting to change. In this video, we look at why vending machines in Japan are quietly being removed, how many are still left, and what this means for tourists planning a trip to Japan.
From rising prices and convenience store competition to shifting consumer habits and modern cashless systems, Japan’s vending machine culture is not disappearing, but it is evolving in ways most visitors won’t notice at first.
If you’re traveling to Japan, this is something you will almost certainly come across, whether in Tokyo, rural towns, or even remote countryside roads.
We also explore:
• Why vending machines are becoming less common in certain areas
• How convenience stores like 7-Eleven, FamilyMart, and Lawson are changing the game
• What Japan’s drink culture reveals about the wider economy
• And why vending machines still remain an iconic part of everyday life in Japan
Japan travel is changing, and this is one of those subtle shifts that most guides don’t talk about.

So long as I can still get my cold Coffee Boss I'll be happy!
Ahh vending machines are one of my favorite things in Japan, the first trip was so exciting, checking every machine if there is something new that looked interesting, sometimes carrying 8 cans at once 🤣 Hopefully they won't disappear completely! It would be great if they could adjust the vending machine prices to make them more attractive again, but the upkeep is probably expensive… If they need someone to restock the hard to reach places for a fair wage just send them to me! Love hiking and walking everywhere and carrying a heavy backpack around already anyway, so it will be easy 😆
Well, If vending machine sites drop from three or four machines to two, no big deal. I hope that the occasional random vending machine in an isolated spot remains. The Konbini's aren't always anywhere close in some areas. In major locations there will be three or four in a few blocks but the less central the fewer Konbini or supermarkets are found. That's when a well stocked vending machine saves the day, or a least my day.
I think they are just trying to reorganize… leaving those in "less served" areas and maybe removing some of the ones which are in close proximity of konbinis and such…
