Michael Pettis is 100% correct. The whole trade & supply chain as leverage, came because they were overleveraged in positions, creating perpetual trade surpluses.
Traditionally, the exchange is trade surpluses, for Military, Security or Foreign Policy control. But that clearly is reneged upon, under rules-based systems.

The dictatorships are getting scared that the democratic countries are pushing back on the unfair things China, Russia is doing.
EU here, more and more the split in world continents are clearer. So the biggest stabile economy's should be the savest. And than the eu smaller country getting together could be the most stabile factor. I think china will attack russki, that is safer and will not be met with great resistance from the other world country's. And china wants mantsoerija back. Taiwan is a realy great risk. usa is gone for years….. and will not return in a meaningfull form for a long time. China is within 10 years allso to weak, low birth, an a lot of old people. Russki is allready death only want not tonstop breathing for now. I see no return for this country. Arab states will decline by the stupid usa action, the world has now discoverd that dependance of other country's is good, only not safe. So new ways will be found end rerouted. For me a return to the old structure is a no go. So returning to domestic controlled way of living is the safest way. Sadly but for me the most realistic thing to do. And yes buying less made in…… far away is not the best way….
Given its population decline, China's construction sector will not be driven by new construction, instead it will be focused on demolition of excess buildings, remodeling/repairing existing structures and infrastructure. New construction will be mostly adapting to shifting population distribution, new facilities for matching changes in the economy, and replacing structures demolished due to their poor condition.

Imagine trying to tell a country where most of the population are poor to switch to a consumption economy on DEMAND. the CCP and its university professors are detached from reality. China has no middle class anymore. the middle class is a global metric not a regional value. To the west China's middle class as considered below the poverty line.

With median income still adjusting to the New economic reality of the world and household formation adjusting to the new social relationship contracts being established between Chinese citizens two of the key elements for this calculation are variables in motion so it is hardly believable to suggest anyone has been able to calculate the answer to the equation when two of the most important variables are presently in flux. But of course it is fairly typical every year to make a prediction that this finally is the year when the crisis is over.

Chuna is massive, its military is massive compared to Japan.
What a farce to clutch its pearls at Japan, who are looking out for its well being. And, look out it should China has become a rather unwelcome neighbor. All of its stealing of companies patients, destruction of markets, back stabbing of countires and word warping (double speak). China is making its own bed, and will have to sleep there, just like Iran.

The Japanese intruder who illegally entered the Chinese embassy armed only with a knife would be laughable and demonstrates how poorly the embassy is protected; but China is greatly exaggerating and acting as a foolish state!!! What China hopes to gain by overblowing the intrusion is far less of value than the clownish actions of the CCP in its complaining which is causing a great deal of laughter at China for its foolish behaviors!!!

Possible stabilization of the housing market is a bit premature, but likely improving somewhat. With population declining significantly and the likelihood of that improving significantly is extremely unlikely!!!

Singapore is a city-state that is ethnically Chinese but is not Chinese either in culture nor in interests!!! Singapore exists to make money and produce high quality products for export!!! It is multi-cultural Asian in its self description and in its policies!!! It cannot afford to look at the big picture of global trade and because it is so small and weak, it must stand up to the giants and seek to play one upon the other without taking sides!!! Any missteps will likely cause it to be absorbed by one of the giants!!!

China is quick to yell aggression from others and even quicker to claim they aren't becoming aggressive to everyone around them. This is hypocrisy of the highest order and is as transparent as glass. Do the Chinese ccp morons think we can't see this as double speak? Just like Iran demanding the world surrender to them as they are being decimated the Chinese think playing word games is a one way road. The world will be called upon to make a decision about how to treat China and as of right now they will treat it the same as Iran. There will be no sympathy when China attacks Taiwan and the world will shut them out of all trade and mercy.
Once the IRGC is reduced to a smoking pile of ashes, China's ccp will have a clear picture of its future!
