How And Why, India Slipped To 6th Largest Economy, Once Overtook Japan, Now Behind UK
India has slipped to the world’s sixth-largest economy, according to the latest data from the International Monetary Fund. Just a year ago, India was being touted as the fourth-largest economy globally, overtaking both the United Kingdom and Japan in nominal GDP rankings. However, the latest World Economic Outlook now places India behind the United States, China, Germany, Japan, and the United Kingdom.

But the fall is not due to economic slowdown. In fact, India continues to remain the fastest-growing major economy, with growth projections ranging between 6.5% and 7.6%. The shift is largely attributed to a weakening rupee and changes in GDP calculation methods, which have reduced the dollar value of India’s economy despite strong domestic performance.
The IMF and other global institutions maintain that India’s long-term growth story remains intact. With strong domestic demand, infrastructure push, and a resilient services sector, India is expected to regain the fourth position by 2027 and potentially rise to the third spot by the early 2030s. The latest rankings highlight how currency fluctuations and global economic dynamics can reshape perceptions, even when underlying fundamentals remain strong.
