Heavy snowfall in wide areas of JapanーNHK WORLD-JAPAN NEWS #shorts

Parts of Japan are expected to be gripped by the coldest air mass this season. Heavy snow is expected in many areas.

The Meteorological Agency is urging people to be on the alert, as the frigid air is forecast to flow into regions along the Sea of Japan. Officials are warning residents of possible traffic disruptions due to road closures. Transportation services may be delayed or canceled.

Some places in Japan’s northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido have already seen record snowfall. Clouds that developed along the island’s Pacific coast dumped a record 112 centimeters on the city of Obihiro during the 12 hours to 8 a.m. on Tuesday. The town of Honbetsu also saw an all-time high, with 85 centimeters.

Thin layers of snow have even been seen in Kyushu, a region of southwestern Japan that rarely gets any accumulation.

The Hokuriku region on Japan’s northwestern coast could receive up to 100 centimeters in the 24 hours through Wednesday morning. Niigata to the north and Gifu to the south could see 80 centimeters. The snowfall is expected to intensify, mainly hitting areas along the Sea of Japan coast.
