Rare freeze at Nachi Falls as cold snap hits JapanーNHK WORLD-JAPAN NEWS #shorts
A cold snap amid an otherwise mild winter in western Japan’s Wakayama Prefecture led to the pond at the foot of the Nachi Falls freezing over for the first time this winter.
The 133-meter-high waterfall is considered a sacred part of the area’s UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Wednesday morning, the coldest day of this winter, saw the waterfall cascade frozen over, with spray turning to ice in the air and glazing the rocks with a white sheen.
Chunks of ice could be seen sliding down from the top of the waterfall. According to the shrine, this is the first time in two years that the basin of the falls has frozen over.
