Season’s first ice floes reach HokkaidoーNHK WORLD-JAPAN NEWS #shorts

It’s ice floe season! Weather officials in Abashiri City in Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost main island, announced that ice floes, a much-awaited natural wonder, have finally reached the city’s coast this year. The annual phenomenon was seen on February 17, the latest since observations began in 1946. Mombetsu City, also in Hokkaido, said ice floes arrived there on February 14. Ordinary boats can no longer sail in the area, but icebreakers allow tourists to view the icy wonder up close.
