yano et agatsuma
Yano Akiko has been a trailblazer in the Japanese music scene since her debut, pushing boundaries with her innovative, genre-defying style. On her 1976 debut album JAPANESE GIRL, she reinterpreted traditional music into fresh, original creations like Funamachi Uta and Tsugaru Tour, introducing what could be called “new folk songs.” Agatsuma Hiromitsu, one of Japan’s premier shamisen players, has similarly brought tradition and innovation to audiences around the world, bridging cultural and genre divides while honoring his instrument’s roots. The two first joined forces in New York in September 2014, captivating audiences with their groundbreaking performance. A triumphant Japan tour followed in 2015, and in 2018, they collaborated on Yano’s album Futaribocchi de Ikou, delivering a bold reimagining of ROSE GARDEN. After strengthening their bond over the years, the two founded yano et agatsuma in 2019.
