US-Japan tariff talks yield no breakthrough even as Trump hails ‘big progress’
Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has warned that trade negotiations with the US will not be easy, after discussions between Washington and Tokyo yielded no real breakthrough. US President Donald Trump, though, said officials made “big progress” in talks. Japan wants a review of US tariffs, including the 25% on auto imports that are already in effect. A separate 24% duty on Japanese goods has been paused for now. Nina-Maria Potts reports from Washington DC.

Japan, you already lose face to Japan in 1945. They are NOT your allied. Stand strong with all the other countries especially Asian countries. They beat you down before, they are now doing it to you and China. BUT if you stand with China, then you can be Strong Together!!
The WW2 started because Japan was doing well but US tried to squeeze them and they got upset. Now, US is trying the same with China. The US was and has never been their allied. They bombed your people. Don't let them win again. If everyone stands together, US can become Africa. 😂
Japan must become a real country, and not a puppet of the US!
If Cramer is reverse indicator, Trump is the bearish indicator.
Whenever he comes out to talk, the market tanks; except for his controversial Truth Social post on 7 April
Japan is NOT US ally. US bombed their people. They were force to work with US. The only reason Japan started the war was because they were squeezed and disrespected by US back in the 1940s. US weakens anyone that will do better than them. They are trying to do it again now, not just to Japan and China but everyone else. Only Japan and China stood up to them. This time, hopefully the world will stand together.
"how are you reading into this?" = the rest of the world is shaking their heads and you wonder whether they are shaking heads up and down snickering or left and right snickering. while the rest of us who are not politicians and still have some sort of basic common sense do <fill in your own blanks>
The deal is when Trump flips again!
Japan is a in a lock-in with US because they depend on them for security protection since WWII. Japan should stand on their own and nego a good package for themselves and never to allow the Plaza Accord situation to occur again which devastated their economy for 3 decades due to yen's appreciation. US is out to loot Japan for sure. Hold your ground Japan!! Gambatte.
Trump is a liar 😅
japan just walk away… USA need you more than you need them… work with CHINA
Great Japan no they don't have extra 20 percent to the downside isn't possible their cultures based on small fluctuations like the carry trade. Why does it work there? And why there at the table ask Germany
Why do leaders play this game with Trump? Its like trying to talk to a spoiled child. He's erratic, and he's a liar. This is what he does. He creates chaos to get what he wants. No country would negotiate with a 12 year old spoiled child, but that's what they are doing. Your not dealing with a fully mature adult. Its sickening that everyone hangs on everything he says and does. The media is the worst. Stop buying American goods. Go to other countries for these things. Jeezuz it isn't rocket science. That's what the wealthy, and the political want you to think, but it isn't. Jeezuz.
Trump is truly delusional, thinking that the world will side with him after bullying them into submission. I wonder when was the last time he visited China. It is a no-brainer for any country to ditch the US and side with China as a much more stable and reliable trade partner, if Trump forces a decision
Japan has no card
If Trump is present during the negotiations, then for sure, Japan will get a better deal because Trump is an idiot.
Countries that spend more time to look for new markets will be the winners. This tariff wargame is a distraction to bring pain till submission.
Countries won't choose sides. They just won't.
Trump’s trade plans are based on his daily moods and his ego. Don’t waste your time talking with an idiot.
A robber perceived like a king😅
i believe what the Japanese says
What a Shameless President, his words no longer carry any weight, no respect.
Really? I thought Japanese minister called Trump "extortionist"
All those big progress just like with Zelensky 😂😂😂
"Big Progress! Big Progress! I got 2 birdie after the meeting with the yellow monkey!"
– Trump (probably)
Diaper don is a grifter big time wait him out he will get impeached. The USA is a communist country now
No wonder the two countries can't reach an agreement. Trump has promised his MAGA followers high tariffs on all countries that allegedly ripped off the US in the past.
What country is stupid enough to let you do that? Certainly not Japan.
Its time to shout banzai and show your bushido.
Mr Trump Unexpected Presence. Bold That Line
They didn’t lick Trump’s ass deep enough to arouse him.
If I was a high official Japanese politician. I wouldn’t trust trump ever. Keep standing tall Japan.
I know the Japanese will not bend the knee. I know trump will lie.
President Trump is the only hope to change and down with the rotten Japanese policy. I wish DOGE wold scrutinize how the Jpapanese tax payer's money is spent and stolen by Japan's LDP particularly the ex-PM Kishida.
Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.
関税では世界は変わらない。1人1人の志が世界を変えていく。先代の人は偉大だったと思う。
😊The WORLD must stand together to watch the DESTRUCTION OF AMERICA BY DUMP JERK TRUMP [DJT]
better ban usa to purchase n sell so all countries have thier own way??
It’s worse to be a friend and ally ofUS than a foe lol. After all the investments that Japan has made in the US, they are still treated like trash. You are still Asian and can be bullied, now look at China, they don’t tolerate any of this nonsense and are prepared to decouple. Art of War – never show weakness.
There is a video of Japan trade minister calling chump an extortionist… lol, japan won't give in to chump, no matter how much this used car salesman might call big progress or whatever. Thats how incompetent he is, he doesn't even understand the people he is negotiating with.. lol.
I kind of think there will be an economic crisis due to tariffing China before japan gives an answer
