  1. One needs to look at military or defence spending (per sq km, per capita) relative to its population and territorial space (land mass, coastline, air, and number of border neighbours). Put China, Japan, the US and Ausland, see for yourself in historical experience and perspective, an intelligent person cannot fail to see the security of each nation, and the threat to its security: who spends the least and the most, and who is ganging up on whom? Look at the hypes for war on the Internet, look at the smear that’s propagated to spook war and fear on any one nation, at what and whose expense to what gain? Which of ‘em nations talk of peace and which abetting and colluding war. As have said, only the intelligent can see and tell while the stupid and mindless denies.

  2. He he he😂 that constitution was imposed to them by the Emperor Douglas McArthur & accepted by vassal emperor Hirohito 🇯🇵 one very important law is , N0 army for Japan; Amerikan soldiers are untouchable in Japan😢

  6. The US pays for the bases because it's their bases and they benefit the most from them. It gives them a foothold for their activities and interests in Asia.

The defense argument doesn't really hold true anymore in the post Cold War era. Japan has its own self defense forces (which btw has the third largest budget of any military in the world and leads especially in its naval capabilities), which are more than enough for its stated purposes of defending the land and waters of Japan.

Obviously Japan has a lot to gain from this current arrangement (hence why it continues), like the secure access to trade that the US global naval presence allows for but that is something that the US benefits from as well. And it is not like securing peace in the region is only possible with US presence. If China and Japan both realized their economic interests and the stability of both of their resource deficient, export oriented economic models both rely on the same exact, fragile trade routes, I doubt we'd be seeing the same level of military buildup we're seeing right now.

Fundamentally this arrangement only exists because it benefits the US. It just so happens that currently, it also helps Japan because it deters China and also has, at least in the short term, brought economic growth to businesses in Okinawa and other regions with military bases.

But let me remind you that the Japanese public overwhelmingly support Article 9. They are also overwhelmingly in favor of base reform, especially following the many many many many high profile r*pe & harassment crimes that have been committed by US servicemen stationed in the country.

The Japanese public are overwhelmingly anti-war, anti-military, and anti-base despite what a few ultra nationalists and the US lapdogs in the japanese government will tell you. During the cold war and beyond, the Japanese public and the government as a result have proceeded without a formal offensive military even when the US wanted it to (e.g. korean war, vietnam war, 80s military buildup, iraq war, and so on).

tl;dr america pays more because it benefits more.
