UN urges India, Pakistan to de-escalate amid Kashmir tensionsーNHK WORLD-JAPAN NEWS
Tensions continue to rise between India and Pakistan in the wake of last week’s deadly attack in Kashmir. The United Nations is now calling for restraint. Gunman opened fire on a group of tourists in Indian administered Jamu and Kashmir on April 22nd, leaving 26 people dead. Indian police are investigating the incident as a terrorist attack, but it is not yet clear who was responsible. The Indian government insists Pakistan was behind it and says it may conduct a retaliatory attack. Islamabad denies the claim. Troops for the two countries have since been exchanging fire along the de facto border. The countries have also taken diplomatic measures and closed their airspace to planes from the other side. UN Secretary General Antonio Gutirez held talk held calls with the Pakistani prime minister and Indian foreign minister on Tuesday. Guteras urged both sides to deescalate, saying confrontation would lead to catastrophe for the world. Australians will head to the ballot boxes on Saturday for the country’s general election. The latest opinion poll shows the ruling Labor Party has a slight lead. The party or coalition that secures over 50% of the 150 seats in the House of Representatives will form a government. Around half of the seats in the upper house senate will also be up for grabs. The previous general election saw now Prime Minister Anthony Albani’s center-left Labor Party return to power for the first time in 9 years. The center-right coalition is led by Peter Dutton of the largest opposition Liberal Party. The most recent poll shows Labor with a 52 to 48% lead over the coalition. Candidates are focusing on cost of living, housing prices, and the Trump tariffs. Voters are also increasingly concerned about similarities between the opposition’s policies and those of US President Donald Trump Trump. Dutton has campaigned on budget cuts and the start of a government efficiency team. Public opinion in Australia is saring on Trump and the poll suggests these policies are hurting the coalition’s prospects in the election. That wraps up our bulletin. I’m Chola Pansanula in Bangkok.
