Japanese war criminals after world war 2

What happened to the Japanese war criminals after World War II? The most important man that went to trial and got executed was the prime minister Hideki Tojo and some other officers which were not that important in the war. All the officers that committed war crimes, the scientists and the emperor himself were spared. The reason the emperor Hirohito was spared was because America thought if they execute him, it would make Japan unstable. So they kept him alive. But for example, one of the most insane people they kept alive was this man, Shiro Ishi. Basically the architect of unit 731, where in a span of 8 years, more than 10,000 people were experimented on and killed. But because he gave the Americans all the research he did, they spared him and he died peacefully in his home in Japan.
