G7 to tackle tariffsーNHK WORLD-JAPAN NEWS
Top finance officials from the group of seven are gathering in Canada for talks. US President Donald Trump’s tariffs and their impact on the global economy are expected to dominate the discussions. NHK World’s Okamura Mumuka is covering the summit at the mountain resort town of B. Moa. Do you think they’ll be able to find any common ground? The TARS will be front and center amid rising trade tensions. The G7 is now facing an unprecedented situation. The US, the country that has been the biggest champion of free trade for a long time, is now imposing tariffs all over the world. Every country wants to take a firm stance against the US. But they find themselves in a tough spot. When the world’s largest economy threatened them with tariffs, this could severely damage their economies unless they make concessions. The US is also unhappy about what it sees as China’s dumping of cheap mass-produced goods like electric vehicles and it’s seeking to bring other countries into its camp to push back against China. The issue of chief Chinese export has been a topic of concern with G7 members, but many countries are dependent on trade with the world’s second largest economy and the turf’s issue is just complicating things. Canada is currently leading G7 and hopes to end meeting with joint statement. People will be closely watching to see if the document is unanimous and how it addresss the issue of China. The BV meeting is set to run through Thursday. Thank you, Monga.
The two-day gathering of G7 finance ministers and central bank governors kicked off on Wednesday in the Canadian mountain resort of Banff. The meeting comes as US tariff policies continue to rattle capitals around the world. NHK World’s Okamura Momoka has the details. #usa #donaldtrump #g7 #china #trade #politics
