India Becomes World’s 4th Largest Economy | Vantage with Palki Sharma | N18G

The Indian economy has crossed a major milestone. India has overtaken Japan and become the fourth largest economy in the world. It is now worth more than $4 trillion. Japan has been pushed to the fifth position. The world has started looking at India differently. In fact, Indian cars are being exported to Japan. A few decades ago, this would have been hard to imagine. For years, India has relied on Japanese cars. From the first Maruti 800 in the 1980s to the modern-day Hondas, Japanese cars have ruled Indian roads. But now, Japan is buying cars made in India. It has become a top export destination for India’s auto sector. Having said that, some challenges still remain. Just last week, Donald Trump threatened both Apple and Samsung. He said if they make their phones outside the US, they could face an additional 25% tariff. And on multiple occasions, Trump has called out India. Trump’s statement could be tactical. It comes at a time when India is discussing a trade deal with the US. But playing hard ball can be a double-edged sword. India has room to maneuver. If the US plays hard ball, there are other trade deals in the pipeline. India is no longer a lagard in the global economy. It is on course to becoming a leader.
