Sacred tree trunks hauled to Ise Jingu for once-in-20-years rebuilding ceremonyーNHK WORLD-JAPAN NEWS

People in central Japan’s Mie Prefecture are hauling massive tree trunks upriver and over land as part of a years-long undertaking. They’re in the process of rebuilding the main sanctuary of Ise Jingu next to the current one. The rebuilding ceremony called “Shikinen Sengu” dates back about 1,300 years. It takes about 8 years and is completed every 20 years. On June 9 and 10, people moved trunks that will be used to create vessels housing the shrine’s sacred objects of worship. Hundreds of people joined an effort to pull large Japanese cypress trunks up a river and through the streets of Ise City. The current relocation is scheduled to finish in 2034. #shorts
