Trump Threatens Japan With New Tariffs Over RICE: Here’s why

a new trade storm is brewing and this time it’s between the US and Japan the world’s fifth largest economy now finds itself in the firing line of US President Donald Trump who is threatening to slap fresh tariffs on Japanese goods in a recent post on Truth Social President Trump has accused Tokyo of refusing to buy American grown rice in his post Trump said they won’t take our rice and yet they have a massive rice shortage in other words we’ll just be sending them a letter and we love having them as a trading partner for many years to come but here’s the twist trump’s claim is not entirely accurate you see Japan did import nearly $298 million worth of US rice last year and this year alone Tokyo has already bought $114 million worth of American rice between January and April but then what is the issue for that answer we have to look into a 2021 US trade report as per this report Japan has a highly regulated and non-transparent rice import system limiting direct access for US rice exporters to Japanese consumers and according to reports that is what Trump’s post was likely referring to but this rice warning from the US president is not a one-off it comes just days before the July 9th deadline on Trump’s 90-day pause of what he calls reciprocal tariffs before the pause however Japanese exports faced a brutal 24% minimum tariff today the numbers sit at a still high 10% but that could double overnight if Trump places fresh sanctions on Tokyo however it’s worth noting that it’s not just Japan who are facing Trump’s tariff wrath just last week Trump pulled the same move with Canada when Ottawa proposed a 3% digital services tax on US tech giants the US president retaliated by ending trade talks with Canada and well it worked canada ended up backing down and the tech tax was dropped and trade talks resumed between the countries but will this tried and tested tactic work on Japan only time will tell for more such stories stay tuned to Mint [Music] [Applause]

U.S. President Donald Trump is escalating tensions with Japan, threatening new tariffs over claims Tokyo refuses to buy U.S. rice, despite Japan importing $298M in 2024 and $114M in the first 4 months of 2025.

Trump’s Truth Social post targets Japan’s “highly regulated” rice import system, as noted in a 2021 U.S. trade report, limiting American exporters’ access. With a 9th July deadline looming for Trump’s paused 24% “reciprocal tariffs,” Japan now faces a big economic pressure.

  1. Mark Carney did not "back down" he made a very clever and strategic move that will have devastating effects on the US. The world will know it July 21. Mark Carney will NOT back down from bullies. Wait and see. The man is brilliant.

  2. Don’t countries have the right to buy where they please? Is there a rule somewhere that says everyone hasta buy amerikan substandard food stuffs?

  3. He has once again demonstrated his appalling stupidity, when it comes to trade. He could have targeted anything, but he targeted rice, apparently completely ignorant of the fact that consumption of rice from the United States is not a global thing.

  4. I'm not sure how you blackmail another nation into buying your third rate goods by imposing a preposterous loading on your imports from that nation.

  5. Japan doesn't need US rice. It can get rice from other countries. Japan can shop around. The rice the Japanes want is specific. Its not just any old rice. The US may not be able to supply the specialty rice Japan wants. There are different types of rice for different dishes, but Trump wouldn't know that.

  6. Trump has bullied so many weak Americans that he thinks he can do it to anyone. He is too stupid to put in the work to get a deal done. Arrogance will not work with the Japanese. Trump is no deal maker. He is a deal faker!

  7. The tech talks stopped because the European Union is going to be imposing 4 1/2 percent in which Canada will be part of. So the buffoon Trump. Got rid of 3 percent and now he's going to have 4 1/2 percent. This guy could be running the Conservative Party of Canada. He's so ** stupid, this Trump.

  8. Japan has room to purchase rice from the United States.
The government stores it as emergency rice stock, which is released when there is a shortage.
and when the rice becomes old, it is used as livestock feed.

  9. Japan can easily export it's rice produce around the world it doesn't need to export it's rice to the USA there is always a good demand for rice by other countries so Japan can stop all it's exports of rice to the USA and would only take a small hit while other markets were put into effect

  10. This how dirty diapers thought he was going to get his 90 deals, he would just threaten other countries and they would beg him for a deals. A loser and always be a loser. Elbow up

  11. Japan keep ón dumping us treasury bonds, so does China, they certainly will not buy new issued treasures needed to finance 'the big beautiful bill'. Interest will rise and inflation will surge. Bye bye America

  12. Trump hasnt done enough damage yet to American farmers because he is so uninformed he has no idea whta he is doing. He has destroyed American soya crop now he is destroying rice corn and wheat sales.
