Severe Tropical Storm Nari to bring heavy rain to eastern, northern JapanーNHK WORLD-JAPAN NEWS

Parts of Japan are bracing for some potentially severe weather over the coming days. That includes a severe tropical storm bearing down on the eastern and northern parts of the country expected to make landfall around Tuesday. As of noon Monday, the Japan Meteorological Agency says severe tropical storm Nari is 120 kilometers off Chiba Prefecture. It’s moving north at 35 kilometers per hour and is expected to continue heading toward Hokkaido. Officials warned the storm will approach Japan’s Pacific coast on Tuesday, bringing heavy rain and strong winds to wide areas, including Tokyo. Meanwhile, rain clouds are also developing over western Japan. Officials are warning of the potential for a linear rainband or intense downpour over a small area Monday night through Tuesday morning. The risk is especially high for central Japan’s Tokai region. The area is expected to see up to 250 millimeters of rain over a 24-hour period. The Kinki region, which includes Kyoto and Osaka, could get up to 200 millime. The Shikoku and Chugoku regions are also expected to see substantial rainfall. The agency is urging people to watch for landslides, flooding in low-lying areas, and swollen rivers. It also warns there’s a risk of lightning strikes, hail, intense wind gusts, as well as possible tornadoes. Now, here’s our meteorologist Monare for more details on the storms. Hi there. We’ve got a bunch of systems that are affecting the weather here in Japan. As we mentioned a lot now in the news, we’ve got that severe tropical storm that’s moving up across the Pacific coast. And on top of all of that, we’ve got a bit of a cold vortex coming in and it’s combining with a remnant of a depression that is building all those uh ingredients together bringing chances of heavy rainfall that will be coupled with a strong ws that could lead to rough seas. So please do be extra careful especially if you are along the Pacific coastline going all the way up into Hokkaido. Now we haven’t really had a storm making landfall in Hokkaido in about 9 years. So I think the last one was around 2016. So people should not be caught off guard. I urge you to be extra careful. Your evening commute on Monday going to morning commute by Tuesday could be severely disrupted. So, please make sure you stay safe and protect yourself at all times due to these gusty strong winds that are coming up towards the coast. That’s where I leave it for the weather. I’ll see you again later.
