How a Rice Shortage Spurred a Japanese Crisis
walk into any convenience store in Japan and you’re likely to see locals and tourists alike picking up a drink and some rice balls But here’s why this savory snack now costs more The price of rice has doubled brought on by a shortage that’s been in the making since 2023 A 5 kg bag of rice used to cost about 2,000 yen or about $14 a year ago but now costs over 4,000 yen It’s worsening the country’s cost of living problem and fueling resentment among the population Supermarket shelves are sparssely stocked with shops now limiting how much rice people can buy Convenience stores have hiked the prices of rice balls and bento boxes to keep up with storing costs To manage the shortage and bring prices down the government started releasing rice from its emergency supplies Still the public remains skeptical about the effectiveness of those measures With an election coming up this July people may use their vote to voice their views on how well Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has addressed the crisis The staple grain at the heart of Japanese cuisine has gotten the public fired up and could make or break the current
Japan’s convenience stores have hiked prices of rice balls and bento boxes, as the staple grain is now more expensive due to a lack of supply.
Here’s how a rice shortage became a national crisis and what it means for the country’s upcoming election. bloom.bg/3SLfF7a

LOL rice price is going to change the party of the government. Listen, no one likes rice as much as me, but just looking at the price of rice alone is not going to convince me to vote for evil leftists
Import rice from India. Or Plant your own rice by saltwater followed Chinese technique or technology
What brought on the shortage?
Why doesn't Japan allow the USA to export rice into the country ?
Who would have known that a country would have a strategic rice reserve 😂

We have plenty of rice in America. Not really concerned. “BUT WAIT! I thought we need china and japans rice!!!” Hahahaha nah..we’re good😂
Now yall are starting to see the impact of Japan having such high tariffs on the US. President Trump is trying to fix that because America has PLENTY of rice, but we aren’t about to get screwed financially giving y’all our rice. Trump is a terrible guy though. Just another greedy businessman right?
The japanese decided not to buy American rice because they want to protect their own rice industry.
Prices NEVER go down.
Change choice of diet😂
Im so glad I live in Indonesia, we have rice surplus this year
You forgot to mention that this happens because they refuse to import rice.
