Bangladesh mourns after military plane hits college campusーNHK WORLD-JAPAN NEWS
A Bangladeshi air force jet crashed into a college campus on Monday in the capital Dhaka. At least 27 people are dead. Authorities say 25 are children. The interim government announced a day of mourning on Tuesday. Leader Muhammad Yunu spoke about the tragedy the day before. None of us could imagine something like this. This is beyond comprehension. But we have to suddenly accept this unbelievable reality. Officials say the other two victims are teacher and the pilot. About 80 others are hospitalized with burns. We saw many students charred. Many were rolling on the floor to extinguish the flames. The Bangladeshi military says the FT7BGI aircraft suffered a mechanical failure shortly after taking off for training. Government officials in Thailand say three soldiers have been injured by landmines and they’re pointing the finger at Cambodia. They say the troops were patrolling along a disputed border area between the two countries on July 16th. They say one sustained a serious leg injury. The officials say the landmines were made in Russia and recently planted by Cambodia and they accused the neighbor of violating a treaty banning the explosive devices. The Cambodian government dismissed the allegations as baseless and unfounded. The two countries exchanged fire in May along the disputed border area. One Cambodian soldier died. Australian defense officials are planning to modernize the naval fleet. They want to introduce 11 new warships, possibly with Japan’s help. The new vessel could be based on the maritime self- defense forces Moami class frigot. It has recently made port calls to Australia. The Moami is built by Mitsubuchi Heavy Industries. Chairman Imisawa Si met Australian government and defense officials on Monday in Canberra. He briefed them on the vessel’s capabilities. Australia is expected to choose a partner for the project in the second half of this year. Japan and Germany are shortlisted as a joint candidate. That wraps up our bulletin.
