Train Company Hits 2030 Climate Goal 6 Years Early — Here’s What They Did Next|Japan ESG Matters
Konnichiwa, and welcome to
ESG Japan Daily. I’m Silas. Today, we bring you a notable update from Japan’s
transportation sector — where Keikyu Corporation, based in Yokohama, has just
updated its climate targets. Known officially as Keihin Electric Express
Railway, Keikyu has revised its intermediate greenhouse gas reduction target upward — a
change under its “Keikyu Group 2050 Carbon Neutral” initiative.
The new target? A 70% reduction in GHG emissions by
fiscal year 2035, compared to 2019 levels. That’s up from their previous goal of a 30% cut
by 2030 — and it is based on recent progress. One of the key changes was achieved in fiscal 2024,
when Keikyu switched to 100% renewable energy to power all trains on the Keikyu Line. That alone
drove a substantial drop in emissions — ahead of previous projections.
But Keikyu didn’t stop there. They’re also aligning with the Japanese
government’s updated targets, issued in February 2025. But notably, Keikyu’s new
goal exceeds both the government’s and the IPCC’s recommendations. For context:
Japan’s national goal is a 60% reduction by 2035 (compared to 2013).
The IPCC recommends a 60% cut by 2035 (compared to 2019).
Keikyu? 70% by 2035 — outpacing these targets. Alongside the new target, the company has
published a detailed roadmap to achieve net-zero by 2050. This includes operational
upgrades, renewable power procurement, and management integration across all group companies.
In fiscal 2025, Keihin Kyuko Bus will begin using CO₂-free electricity for EV buses and some
offices. And Keikyu Service Company will implement renewable electricity at its training centers.
Now, here’s the ESG angle. This is a case of a corporate group
adjusting its targets in response to faster-than-expected progress. Keikyu revised
its targets ahead of the original review period after observing its results.
And here’s today’s ESG question: If your company achieved its 2030
target six years early, would you raise the target — or take a break?
