For Washington, this represents a profound shift: Japan has been the cornerstone of U.S. strategy in the Pacific for decades, hosting over 50,000 U.S. troops and securing vital sea lanes that handle nearly one-third of global trade.

The turning point came after Donald Trump’s return to the White House. In March 2025, Trump imposed sweeping tariffs on Japanese cars—an industry that makes up nearly 20% of Japan’s manufacturing output and accounts for about one-third of its exports to the U.S. Before the tariffs, Japanese automakers exported 1.7 million vehicles annually to America.

If Japan, the world’s fourth-largest economy with $4 trillion GDP, were to join BRICS, the consequences would be seismic. For the G7, it would shatter the image of Western unity.
