“Carney Just Saved the Economy: Huge Trade Deals Signed with Japan, Australia & India”
Mark Carney just pulled off something historic. In a nine-day diplomatic blitz across the Indo-Pacific, the Prime Minister secured major trade and partnership deals with three of the world’s biggest economies: Japan, Australia, and India. These agreements are being called the biggest trade deals in Canadian history, and they fundamentally shift Canada’s economic future away from its decades-long reliance on the United States.
What Exactly Just Happened?
Carney’s trip, which ran from February 26 to March 7, 2026, was a strategic masterclass in economic diversification. Facing an unpredictable trade environment with the U.S., including tariffs on steel, aluminum, autos, and lumber, Carney took a simple but powerful message to Asia: Canada is open for business, and we are looking for new, reliable partners.
The India Breakthrough
The biggest headline came from New Delhi. Carney met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the two leaders agreed to completely reset their relationship after years of diplomatic tensions. They announced plans to finalize a “comprehensive economic partnership” by the end of 2026, with a bold target of doubling bilateral trade to $50 billion by 2030. But the details are even bigger. India agreed to buy Canadian uranium, opening a massive new market for our energy sector. New agreements were signed on critical minerals, space, defense, education, and AI cooperation. This is a full reset. As one official put it, both countries decided the relationship was “too important to let go.”

The Japan Partnership
Japan, the world’s fourth-largest economy with a $5.5 trillion market, was the final stop, and Carney delivered. Canada and Japan signed new agreements strengthening ties in trade, energy, and defense. This is huge because Japan is already Canada’s fourth-largest source of foreign direct investment, with nearly $40 billion in annual bilateral trade. Plus, 70% of cars manufactured in Canada are made by Japanese companies like Toyota and Honda, supporting thousands of Canadian jobs. This deal secures and expands that relationship.

The Australia Alliance
In Canberra, Carney became the first Canadian Prime Minister in 20 years to address both houses of the Australian Parliament. The relationship with Australia is like a family reunion, two Commonwealth countries with deep bonds and similar economies. The new deals focus on critical minerals, defense and maritime security, AI, and allowing our massive pension funds to invest more easily in each other’s countries.

Why This Matters
This isn’t random. It’s a plan. In his famous Davos speech, Carney called on “middle powers” like Canada to band together so they don’t end up “on the menu” for larger powers. These deals with Japan, Australia, and India, three of the most important Indo-Pacific democracies, are the execution of that vision.
The U.S. takes 77% of Canada’s exports. Carney has now set a clear goal: double non-U.S. exports within a decade. These deals are the first giant step toward that goal.
What Happens Next?
Now the real work begins. Canadian businesses have to walk through these open doors. Farmers need to sell beef and wheat to Japan. Miners need to ship critical minerals and uranium to India. Tech companies need to partner with Australia. If we execute, this could mean higher wages, more jobs, and a more prosperous future for every Canadian.

I really believe we can get through this stronger and more resilient.
This is going to improve every Canadians life for the better!!
Strength through diversification. I think most of us Canadians agree that our PM is making moves that will ensure our economic stability and that how middle powers together can reorganize the world order. Instead of coersion, I think that nations are seeing that Canada is a stable partner. I believe further trade is being discussed in many other nations, including those in the EU, South Korea , and Indonesia. It may sound facetious, but we do have some darn good maple syrup.
