Japan PM Takaichi Vows To Control Bond Issuance Amid Record Debt Concerns
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has pledged to maintain fiscal discipline and control government bond issuance as investors grow increasingly concerned about Japan’s enormous public debt and rising borrowing costs. Speaking in parliament on October 5, 2026, Takaichi said fiscal sustainability would remain a prerequisite for her government’s economic strategy.
Japan’s public debt is roughly twice the size of its economy, the highest ratio among developed nations. At the same time, yields on long-term Japanese government bonds have climbed sharply, with the 30-year JGB yield reaching a record 4.235% on Monday. Higher yields increase the government’s cost of servicing and refinancing its debt.
