Why EV Tariffs Won’t Stop Chinese Cars

Today, China has the manufacturing capacity to supply half the world’s cars. And it has its eyes on the United States. While there are already Chinese-owned brands available in the states, including Volvo, Polestar and Lotus, no true Chinese brands have arrived in the U.S. as of yet. Insiders say it’s only a matter of time though. President Biden slapped Chinese automakers with stiff tariffs – effectively doubling the price of an imported EV May 2024. However, some insiders say tariffs may not be that effective in the long run, and may even do more harm than good.

Why EV Tariffs Won’t Stop Chinese Cars

  1. Meanwhile all congress does is fight over culture wars. We have lost our focus on economics by distractions that do not matter.

  2. Why Should I buy a trash Tesla for 60K, while I can buy a nice BYD car with amazing dash and interior design for less than 20K (without tariff)?

  3. Imagine a car that's sold only 10,000 $ with a full tank running 1300 miles, very low cost for maintenance, that's what BYD is making right now.

  4. this is just a consequence of the greed from American corporations, in the previous decades, they moved most of their plants or all of their plants to other countries, mostly China and now they can't compete. They hated workers demanding wage increases so they looked for cheap labor, took all the training away from America and you gave away all the advantage to the Chinese. And the Chinese were smart and NATIONALIST and they learned everything they could to SERVER THEIR COUNTRY while the American corporations including CNBC had been promoting Marxism at home and anti-nationalism because "muh far right danger"

  5. Why don't you make clear that Mexico became the largest trading partner because 1. China America trade collapsed to a point very close to Mexico's, 2. China moved a lot of companies to Mexico and they are operating them.

  6. Some few years ago the US complained to Germany that they do not import enough US Made cars… the reply was simply to,manufacturer better cars then then buyers will buy…. Same here it is the quality not the price

  7. Whaaa, so USA doesn't heavily subsidize Chip manufacturing? US gave $50B to Intel, TSMC! And they're complaining about $3.7B to BYD? As expected, MSNBC news is always biased. From Canada 🇨🇦. BTW, do you how many regular Canadians would love to buy cheap BUT good quality Chinese EV? A whole lot!!

  8. Biden ia a hypocrite. Talk about green energy. They will not tariff if solar panels were made by western companies. They will say green environment is the main criteria

  9. If the calculation is to impose tariffs and that this will solve the problem of China it will fail, if the expectation is that the car industry to use the breathing room to do what it takes to compete with China it will fail. The only thing that will make the US/EU car industries competitive is to replace the entire corporate leadership of the auto industry which still lives in the 1990s with people who live in the early 21st century.

  10. US military arms sales is greater than the world top ten COMBINED.
    isn't that an OVERSUPPLY?
should the world ban the sale, transportation of America Arms?

  11. It is too risky for China to manufacture EV in the US.
One US senator said let them in, in case of a war (with US or proxy war with Taiwan or any other country) we will nationalise their assets

  12. 台灣的法律很薄弱,如果這種事發生在美國,受害者有權獲得100萬美元到幾百萬美元的賠償!這就是對精神傷害的補償
