Trump’s US-Japan trade deal is ‘not a good deal at all’: Analysis

US President Donald Trump says the US has reached a trade deal with Japan. Trump says the agreement will see Japan invest $550 billion in the country and that both countries will each pay a tariff of 15% on goods. The full details of the deal are yet to be released. But I just signed the largest trade deal in history. I think maybe the largest deal in history with Japan and that was done with Japan. They had their top people here and uh we worked on it long and hard and it’s a great deal for everybody. I always say it has to be great for everybody. It’s a great deal. A lot different from the deals in the past. I can tell you that. But uh we’re doing really well as a country. We’re strong. We have a lot of money flowing in. the tariffs are kicked in better than anybody other than me and a few of the people in the room uh thought could happen. Sajjida Takashita is dean at the University of Shizuoka’s graduate school of management informatics and innovation and he’s joining us from Shizuoka in Japan. Great to see you. Thank you for your time. Uh so US tariffs will go from 25 to 15% and the that 15% will be reciprocal. Do you think that’s a good deal overall? No, it’s not a good deal at all. People are focusing on numbers. You can see the Japanese market rising very sharply in back of this because many people had anticipated 25% and that’s been reduced to 15. But this is the game that poker game that you know uh the Trump delegates are playing. Uh be it 25 15 or 5% if there is no context or reasoning to it then it should be abolished. Uh, for example, automobile. Japan has zero tariff against American cars and he’s constantly claiming that we’re not buying American cars. Well, it’s not nothing to do with the United States, but simply uh, you know, US cars are not good enough for the Japanese. It doesn’t match, you know, uh, the Japanese consumers. That’s all it is. But, you know, um, to basically just only looking at numbers is what people are doing right now. And what we have to also be alarmed about is that what he’s saying or writing about could change the other day 180°. So let’s see more detail uh about the uh uh the whole scheme is what I’d like to say. Yeah, we are all waiting for those details including Prime Minister Isha. Um but if we look at automobiles, they are a huge part of US Japan trade. almost all of it like you said is one way from you know the US importing cars from Japan and that’s a fact that’s long irked Trump. Do you see this deal changing the direction of that trade at all? Well, his bullying will go through. Um but I don’t think you know Japanese consumers will be happy buying American cars. The fact is the Japanese buy for example German cars a lot. uh you know they’re all doing very well in Japan because they make good cars and Japanese consumers are very very sensitive and picky. So you know um I think you know that is the conclusion. I think however that said you know his bullying may open up some of the negativity of Japan the vested interest involved in issues like for example rice and meat where you know there is an unjustified unfair tariff against the United States um protected by vested interest of the likes of JA Japan agricultural corporates. So that could be you know uh uh changed through constructed destruction of a vested interest through his you know methodology that he’s adopting to the Japanese trade policies and the as you said the Japanese stocks did rally as a result of this announcement. You’re saying it’s because the market was expecting perhaps 25% and so 15% seems like a a a good compare to that. Um but do you think that Prime Minister Ishiba will be able to sell this to the Japanese people? That’s a good question because well as you know in the upper house election it was a devastating loss for the LDP the ruling party and a lot of it is being uh pointed at you know m Mr. Ishiba’s lack of leadership and uh well you know having negotiation United States is very difficult in the first place. Now he has to go through the second hurdle of convincing the diet as a whole in agreeing to this plan. So that is also becoming very very difficult. So he has a very very difficult task ahead and in fact even within LDP there are voices rising quite sharply about you know his recognization. So the stability of the political issues in Japan are becoming very very wobbly to say the least. Saja Takashita it’s always great to get uh your thoughts. Thank you for your time. Thank you.

  1. Maybe you can get deals with government but there is no guarantee the citizens will buy anything American but if they do, it will be severely discounted or there is no competition. With the way of bullying these days, the result of buy ANYTHING but American world wide. Just look at Tesla, an excellent engineered car unfortunately it is American. Elbows Up

  2. This is the best deal Japan can ever get; the entire world, including the universe, should follow and use this deal as a baseline.

  3. Trump the comedian achieved a deal with Japan ?
    Really ?
Of course he did,,,,,,is it because Japan products and cars are better then what the US can achieve in comparison to China and Japan ?
    YES !!

  4. I grew up in Japan, and my dad loved American cars—said they weren’t made out of tin foil. He proudly drove a Pontiac Trans Am, Mercury Monarch, Grand Prix, and even a Cadillac through the narrow streets of Tokyo. Definitely stood out!

  5. Japanese government has been relying a lot on the American market since the end of WW2 and it isn't because Japan is not able to penetrate into other markets. It's because they became tied with the American pacifist constitution. And it's agreeable that American cars are not cars, they are wreckages.

  6. Malaysian Proton cars are much better than those American cars. American cars used low quality parts, assembled by untrained workers and outdated automation system and the parts are really expensive although they lack in quality. Ford Fiesta used to be popular in Malaysia, however, many were later sold because those Fiestas broke down a lot.

  7. A Toyota Noah is extremely flexible that the car can be sold and driven anywhere in the world. And a Chevrolet, with it's big engine and low quality parts plus weird design, emm, you already knew the answer.

  8. Let's see how long this "agreement" lasts. Trump signed the "greatest trade agreement ever' with Mexico and Canada in his first term and unilaterally scrapped it as "unfair" as soon as he resumed the Presidency in 2025. There is little point in negotiating with the US.

  9. On the surface it might look like a good deal, at least better than before the negotiation. But is Japan really serious and genuine in investing $550 billion in the US? Big talk probably after all Japan's ruling party lost badly in the election and its PM could resign.

  10. Car manufacturers in the US must be biting their lips in anger….lowering tariffs to Japanese cars??? The $500B of US bonds Japan has to buy is the real thing Trump is crowing about but 'what if' China sells $500B of US bonds??

  11. Why is this a bad deal for Japan? It's vehicles are only subject to a 15% tariffs. Meanwhile , US Domestics face a 25% tariff on all foreign parts. In fact, GM and ford complaining the deal hurts us manufacturing. EU auto imports facing 30% tariff. China autos face 100% tariff. Maybe the US administration got played and is only coming to the realization now.

  12. So American carmakers have a 50% tariff on aluminum and steel, but an Asian car market only gets a 15%. Way to stick up for your country. You clown

  13. Just a note here . who owns america.? your answer would be americans well you are wrong trump is so thick it is stunning, slowly but surely japan and china etc buy america. and the tangerine toddler thinks he is a genius, the Japanese played him nicely. . they are the winners here not america.

  14. Many years ago when the car company Suzuki began exporting small 4WD's to the US, this model was very popular among the young surfers. The US car companies realised that Suzuki vehicle was very popular. The US car companies then organized a propaganda campaign which claimed that the Suzuki 4WD vehicle was substandard, unsafe to drive and had a tendency to fall over. Several US states even banned the resale of Suzuki vehicles.

  15. USA, DJ Trump is playing all Americans and you're letting him do it to you. He's pulling all kinds of garbage pursuits to distract everyone of you from the real issues his legal case involving Epstein. So, let Trump play you, like he has been doing since returning to the White House; OR, push the issue of getting rid of him. He's not there to make America Great Again, he's there to Lie and fill his pockets and his family's pockets with your Tax Money.

  16. America, funny thing! According to what your DJ Trump does is a success! But, only his say. Trump's claims are nothing but Lies and Propaganda; AND, instead of making "America Great Again", he's made it the World's #1 Enemy.

  17. Trump's clown show assumes one important detail. People will just continue to spend as before like nothing has changed. Trump wants the Fed to lower interest rates to 1% so people can afford to borrow more to pay for the tax increase.

  18. Lol buy agricultural products? Buy Boeing airplanes? Look like uncle Sam trying to find buyers for export products that China cancelled or refused 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 good luck finding replacement or market big enough to replace China. FAFO trade war fun huh??
