President Trump announced a trade deal with Japan. They just signed the largest trade deal in history. I think maybe the largest deal in history with Japan. The deal includes 15% tariffs on goods entering the US from Japan. Trump has threatened to impose 25% tariffs beginning August 1st. Auto tariffs, which took effect in April, will also be lowered from 25% to 15%. The Japanese auto industry likely breathing a sigh of relief. Auto exports to the US made up nearly 30% of all shipments from Japan last year and were down sharply last month. Trump says under this new deal, Japan would also invest $550 billion in the US at his direction, claiming the US would get 90% of the profits, but not elaborating on what those investments might be. The deal comes just hours after Trump announced a deal with the Philippines, saying that country will pay 19% tariffs on exported goods. Only slightly less than what Trump had threatened. The administration last spring predicted 90 trade deals in 90 days, but only a handful of deals have been reached so far. We have Europe coming in tomorrow and the next day, and we have some other ones coming in. We’re doing things that have never been done in this country before. Our country is becoming very rich again. Now, Trump also says the US and Japan are close to a deal on exporting liqufied natural gas from Alaska.
