Takaichi’s goals: Reinvigorate Japan and spur economic growth, says analyst

Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) elected conservative nationalist Sanae Takaichi as its new leader on Saturday (Oct 4), paving the way for the 64-year-old to become the country’s first female prime minister. Seijiro Takeshita, professor of management and information at the University of Shizuoka, shares with CNA’s Asia First how effective Takaichi could be in addressing the country’s key challenges if she secures the parliamentary vote to become prime minister.

  1. If Abe, whose LDP had a more commanding position in Parliament, what makes people think the Takaichi administration will fare better with the "third arrow" of structural reforms? BOJ deficit-financing, here we come!

  2. He clearly is a fan of Abe. Abe promised economic structural reform and increased entrepreneurship and delivered none of that. Words are easy then and now.
