Takaichi tipped for big win as Japan votes

Japan went to the polls Sunday in snap elections, with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi seeking to turn her honeymoon start into a decisive ballot box victory.

Opinion polls suggest her Liberal Democratic Party, which has ruled almost continuously for decades, will easily secure the 233 seats needed for a majority in the 465‑member lower house.

Some forecasts even point to a two‑thirds majority with coalition partners, which would be the party’s best result since 2017 under the late Shinzo Abe.

Takaichi, Japan’s first woman premier, has struck a tough stance on immigration and China, while promising economic relief through stimulus measures and a suspension of food consumption tax.

Her campaign has drawn strong interest, especially among younger voters, with her image as both a conservative leader and unlikely celebrity.
