Did China control Japan? I Saloni Khanna

In 2010, a small territorial dispute between Japan and China over the Senkaku Islands turned into a massive economic wake up call. China suddenly halted rare earth exports to Japan. Within 48 hours, Japanese companies like Toyota, Sony, and Panasonic began facing production slowdowns and raw material shortages.

Rare earth minerals are not just industrial inputs. They are the backbone of smartphones, electric vehicles, defense systems, and advanced electronics. When China paused exports, it exposed how deeply global economies depend on critical minerals controlled by a single country.

Was this economic strategy? Was it geopolitical signaling? Or was it a preview of how modern wars are fought through supply chains instead of weapons? This incident changed how the world views resource power and economic security forever.
