Spring fling: Setsubun traditions in NikkoーNHK WORLD-JAPAN NEWS #shorts

Preparations for the Setsubun festival are underway at the famed Rinnoji Temple in Nikko. A monk is blessing 300 kilograms of fortune beans. The temple prepares 180 boxes for a ritual known as ‘mamemaki’. People throw beans in this centuries-old tradition to drive away evil spirits and bring good fortune to the throwers and their families.

Setsubun takes place on the day before the start of spring in the Japanese lunar calendar. This year, it falls on February 2. People across Japan will be throwing special beans in the hopes of ushering a prosperous spring.
