Japan marks 30th anniversary of devastating Kobe earthquakeーNHK WORLD-JAPAN NEWS #shorts

People in Japan mark the 30th anniversary of the 1995 Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake that claimed the lives of more than 6,400 people. The magnitude 7.3 quake struck before dawn on January 17th, devastating Kobe City in western Japan and surrounding areas. 30 years later, people attended the annual gathering at a park in Kobe to remember the disaster and those who lost their lives. Lanterns form the date 1-17 and spell out the Japanese word “yorisou,” which means to stand with. There was a moment of silence at 5:46 a.m., the exact time the quake occurred. More than 100 billion dollars has been spent on recovery efforts. In October, the last building included in reconstruction projects was completed. #japan #earthquake #disaster
