  1. Something these governments never consider with the falling fertility rates, is that people tend to have less kids in pessimistic times. Fertility rates were actually dropping off in the 1930's, but then post WWII was an incredibly optimistic time and fertility boomed. Jobs were plentiful and well paid, housing cheap, technology was progressing rapidly, human rights were improving, and modern medicine meant everyone was healthier and lived longer. It was hardly a perfect time, but the future was looking bright! And then, slowly and steadily, everything got worse and worse, and now many young folk feel utterly hopeless and don't want to bring kids into that kind of hopeless environment where they're not even sure if the earth won't get toasted in the next 100 years.

  2. Calling it now, Japan is going to fix their debt problem by importing rich immigrants. They’ve already started to make visas easier to get. Plus, the rest of the world is waking up to the whole “social cohesion” thing and how nice that would be.

  3. A lot of the London/rest of the UK divide comes down to government policy and long term lack of spending outside of London (it's especially bad in the north of England).

Thatcher closing down a bunch of mines in the 80s killed a bunch of towns pretty much overnight. To this day, former mining areas (where nearly 6 million people live) have 25% less jobs per capita and 10% lower wages than the national average.

Government spending on public transport per capita in London is nearly double the national average. 41% of the English government's R&D spending goes to London and the South East, despite them being only 32% of the population. Obviously this can quickly become a feedback loop, where government spending makes London more attractive to private investment, which makes it more attractive to future rounds of government spending, which makes it more attractive to private investment, and so and so on.

HS2 is the big recent example of the government fucking over the north of England. It's a high speed rail network that was promised to connect London to the north of England. It was started back in 2012, and would have been huge economically. Fast forward 12 years and successive governments have pissed billions up the wall, cut back the scope of the project so many times that it's essentially unrecognizable, and the track is now planned barely make it to the Midlands let alone the actual North.

I work in London, and I love the city, but if I ever want to leave as I get older or want to raise a family, I'm immediately looking at taking probably a 30% pay cut, and that's assuming I can actually find comparable work outside of London. It's a bit fucked (unless you can WFH and get paid London salaries, in which case you're laughing and can go pay literally 50% of the rent in Manchester or Birmingham).

  4. hey atrioc, long time fan here – could you please do a video on Pakistan's economy. It's pretty horrible but definitely super interesting and has always been, would love to see a vid on that!

  5. I think no one wants to have kids is a sign. Maybe we all feel cramped in, working pay check to pay check feeling stressed out, and we all feel the planet warming up. So maybe it's like a animal instinct to hold off on kids until we know what is happening.

  6. Just on the London example, it is drastically changing. I live in a town a few hours away from London and my role in IT is better outside London, as a lot of firms deal with London, so charge "London Rates" but we work remote so we get that saving in living price difference. But alot of places cost of living is going up and wages are being forced to go up to counter act. In my example, I asked my boss for a raise, as i need to move and rent was going in the area around work, i said i would need to quit to move somewhere else which cheaper rent, so he gave me a raise to keep me on.

  7. Let me first say I have not worked in Japan, I did study abroad and took all the Japanese and East Asian econ classes I could in college (not weeb reason I just really like Japanese food). So yes I will be another white dude commenting on Japan.
    1.)
As a lot of these commenters point out, the culture makes the place super cool as a tourist but a nightmare to live in and is a big reason the birth rate is so terrible. I’m not even meaning long work hours as it is a bit more than just that. Correct me if it has changed from what my professors told me, I’m pretty sure it is still the Japanese societal expectation that women will become stay at home moms or close to it whenever they have kids. And if you built a career as a woman, you likely don’t overly want to do that. Therefore less likely to have kids.
Also their culture around sex in general doesn’t seem overly helpful and likely seems like a reflection of culture, but I’m not going there since I haven’t studied that cultural component as much.

  8. One correction regarding the 4 day week: that thing is highly deceiving. It only applies to the Tokyo government. Even worse, it is simply a flextime measure reading as "if you work 10 hours a day, then you only need to work 4 days a week instead of 5 at 8 hours".

  9. The real explanation for UK which everyone seems to miss is Brexit. It not only slowed growth but it also massively subdued the exchange rate, which is why it particularly looks bad whenever these comparisons are inevitably made in dollar terms

  10. I have a British friend who lives outside of London and is fucking poor as fuck. There are other issues going on in her life, but damn is it hard to live in the UK. The tories were taking EVERYTHING away from people to live, but luckily labour is giving some of it back.

  11. part of the issue with the inflation, is that people don’t spend their money when they retire at all. Like literally 90% of japanese have a huge inheritance when they die. So all of the wealth is situated at the top ages, and no spending destroys the economy cuz businesses don’t get any cash flow

  12. This plan just seems like it was made by out of touch politicians who have been a politician all of their life. Main reasons why people aren't having kids is because lack of money lack of individual wealth for kids it takes time and resources to be dedicated to them, if you don't have the resources your not going to have them, and if you do they will suffer, lets also say that a 50% tax doesn't help this. Another reason people aren't having kids because they are being brainwashed in schools (for both men and women) to work all their lives and not dedicate any time to themselves, ever heard of Mappa? The people who made JJK, they are a prime example of this behavior, work their people to the bone and pay them dirt cheap for it.

Add ontop of it their schools promote high grades, their schools are also much more competitive than US schools. The way japan is today, and the crisis it is in is a result of politicians from the 1970s-80s wanting to be like the US and better than it, along with wanting good money. However politicians lack the ability to think long term because of their ability to gain from their current position. Japan made itself like this, 6 hour work days won't help, 4 day work weeks won't help, if you have 4 day work weeks you will get payed less, the same with 6 hour work days then times that by 4. The only thing that may help out of this is free Pre-K.

  13. I actually wondering if the 4 day thing and the new benefits will do anything. Because unless they get paid more then it makes living harder. Japanese workers already don't take all their vacation pay because it looks bad, and don't get me started on Black Companies, they would never allow any of these, cause they are the ones that are really trash to their employees. The free Pre-k is gonna only work for current parents with those kids. What about daycare for the kids that are to young? It's not gonna work for two parents already having a hard time with one of them not working at all. They need to pay them more and actually start giving the working people more mental health. Basically just put in for your time off and get it approved and tell them that you are not in any way inconvencing anyone but themselves for not taking time for themselves. It's not selfish. That's what needs to be done. More pay, better health, more reason to spend money, get married, and have children.
