Trainee monks endured the winter cold to purify themselves by bathing in a river at the Koyasan temple complex in Wakayama Prefecture. The 30 monks attending a training institute took part in the annual ritual. The temperature was minus 0.1 degrees Celsius — in both water and air. The monks spent about 10 minutes in the river as visitors looked on.
