Behind-the-curtains tours of Tokyo’s National TheatreーNHK WORLD-JAPAN NEWS #shorts

The National Theatre in Tokyo, a hub for traditional Japanese performing arts like kabuki, bunraku, and gagaku, first opened its doors in 1966. After closing for reconstruction in October 2023, escalating construction costs and other challenges have left its future uncertain. In the meantime, efforts are underway to keep the space active and accessible.

One tour gave a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse of areas typically off-limits to the public. Organized by the Japan Arts Council in partnership with travel agency HIS, the experience allows visitors to try on authentic kabuki costumes and experiment with traditional sound effects.
