Concerns mount over further military actions between India and PakistanーNHK WORLD-JAPAN NEWS
Pakistani Prime Minister Shabbash Sharif has vowed to retaliate after India launched strikes on Pakistan and Pakistan administered Kashmir. New Delhi says they were in response to last month’s terror attack in India controlled Kashmir. We will avenge each drop of blood of these martyrs. Sharif spoke to the nation on Wednesday after the Indian military launched strikes on what New Delhi called terrorist infrastructure. The Pakistani government says at least 31 people were killed. India has indicated there could be further military strikes depending on Pakistan’s response. Tensions between the two countries have been rising since last month’s attack against tourists when gunmen killed 26 people. The Pakistani government has denied any involvement. World leaders are urging India and Pakistan to deescalate tensions. Oh, it’s so terrible that I want to see it stop and if I can do anything to help, I will I will be there. British Prime Minister Kier Starmer also touched on the situation in Parliament. Rising tensions between India and Pakistan will be of serious concern for many across Britain. He makes a very good point. Starmer said the UK is encouraging both sides to engage in dialogue and protect civilians. A woman who lost her husband in the April attack in India controlled Kashmir has spoken to NHK about her sorrow. Most of the 26 victims were tourists from India. Aisha Dvet’s husband ran a shop that supplied cement in India’s northern state of Uttar Pradesh. She and her husband Shubam were on a family holiday when the violence began. Aa says a man approached them and asked whether they were Hindus or Muslims. When they answered Hindus, the man pulled out a gun and shot her husband. She says she was stunned and shook him, but her sister grabbed her and pulled her to safety. She and her husband had only just gotten married in February. Every morning when I wake up, I just think he’s next to me. Maybe he’s next to me. I’m not able to process the fact that this happened. Killing a husband in front of a wife is very brutal, sir. It’s very brutal. Asha says she remembers hearing a lot of screaming and shouting amid continuing gunfire. She says the government has got to take a tougher stance on terrorism. The Philippines says Chinese naval ships have conducted what it calls aggressive and unsafe movements in disputed waters in the South China Sea. Beijing has rejected the claim. The Philippine military says the incident occurred earlier this week when its patrol ship encountered two Chinese frigots near the Scarbor shore. Philippine military video footage shows one of the Chinese vessels sailing alongside the patrol ship while the other cross in front of its path. The military describes the measure as threatening and provocative, saying it could have resulted in a misunderstanding that increased tensions and impacted regional stability. A spokesperson for China’s Southern Theater Command has dismissed the claim, saying the shaw is China’s inherent territory. He says the Philippine vessel was attempting to intrude into Chinese territorial waters. He called on the Philippines to immediately stop its infringement, provocation, and distortion of the truth. Manila and Beijing have been locked in a long-standing dispute over the Scarbor boro shaw. But it is unusual for warships from both countries to confront each other. The shaw lies within the Philippines exclusive economic zone, but China effectively controls it. Last year, Beijing unilaterally announced baselines in what was seen as an attempt to consolidate its control over the area. And that wraps up our bulletin antra in Bangkok.
