GRAND SUMO: Day 10 of the May 2025 Tournament – GRAND SUMO Highlights
Hello again. Welcome to Grand Sumo Highlights. It’s day 10 of the summer tournament and it’s a summery kind of day. 2930° in Tokyo. It’s warm inside the Koko Geek, but nothing’s hotter than this man right now. The Yozeki doing really well with a perfect start. Can he keep it going? Maintain his lead and go all the way as him on top with nine straight followed by two men with one loss. Hako, Al- Nishki then three with two losses. Horseshoy, Wakataga, Kag and Asa. So, a lot to look forward to today in the matchups. The fans are fanning themselves cuz it is warm, but they’re in for some scintillating sumo. Let’s get to the action. Being an even number day, we’re going to introduce the men on the right side. First, we have Toi Taikai and Kot. Here’s Tochi Taikai, the rookie at three and six. First time meeting and taking on the coming off injury. Still slightly troubled by the thigh. Kotto Shoo. Good slap inside position briefly by Kotto Shoo. He grabs the arm, tries to throw. They go down at the same time. The Goomba is pointed the way of Kot. And is it going to be a disco? Yep. Well, the hand raised. The arm goes down, the body goes down. Well, it looks like Kotto Shaw getting the win. But they’re having a discussion about it. Although the goji gave the gumbai to Tochi Taika, we had a monoy claim it was simultaneous with Tochi Taikai’s hand touching the ground and the whole body of KTO Shaw lifted up in the air. So upon our review, we confirmed likely so it’s going to be a rematch. Well, fair enough. I guess the feet left the ground. Let’s have another go. Good attack. Left hand outside grip trying to swing around. Cotto is to taikai. But now it’s settled in the middle of the doho. To tikai likes to get that right hand inside. He does brilliantly. Gets a nice grip of the moashi to win by the first one. It’s close. There was no closeness there. Solid win by Kotto Shaw picking up his fourth win. Three and seven. Tot now. Shauna and Toki Hayate. They’ve met three times and Shauni has a slight edge. Both struggling. This man’s at four and five. And Shaoni a little worse at three and six. Moashi battle normally retreating. Grabbing the arm is Tokihite. almost steps out there rallying back to get inside with a solid left hand grip. That’s what he wants against Shaunumi. Retreating, spinning, and a throwing attempt at the edge. A cotton by Toki Hayate. Another close one. No Monoi this time. Nope. So Toki Hayate gets the nod to pick up his fifth win and drop Shaoni to three and seven. Well, two opening bouts very close at the edge. Tit fortat move in the middle of the dojo. One man going one way then the other trying to get the left hand in. He gets it. Can’t do much with it initially. And now trying to get an arm grip is Shaani. He loses that position and down he goes. Sonumi and Thomaso step up. This is a first time meeting between these two. There’s the legend, one of them in sumo, heading towards 1500 career bouts, taking on relative newcomer to the top division, 32-year-old Thomas Sho, four and five. Sadomi 6 and three, grabbing the neck and retreating quickly. Another close one at the edge. The Goombai has gone the way of Thomas Sho. He appeared to be in the air when he was slapping down Saturnumi. Let’s watch the replay here. Watch the footwork of Thomas Shoal. That foot is out before Saturni maybe. Although the Gilji gave the Goombai to Thomas Sho, we had a monoi that maybe his heel touched outside first. So upon our review, we confirm it’s likely so. Therefore, we have a reversal decision. The winner is now Satani. Yeah, another close one at the edge. This time it favors the veteran Sonumi to win by Oshidashi. Okay to leap in the air, but it’s good to keep one inside the dojo. Not the case for Thomas Shoh today. Now, Duden and Tommy Fuji. These two are bit twice in the top division. A win each in at four and five. Mashida 15. Tommy Fuji Mashida 126 and three. Looking positive today. He’s always got that steely look. Well, he jumped into the touchy. Tammy Fuji looking for that inside grip. He wants the right hand inside, left hand out, but he can’t get it. Blocked by Duden. Duden not doing much with that position though. And now he retreats and then lunges forward. And clever move by Atami Fuji. Take him across the other side of the dojo. If you’re going to retreat and slap down, started on their side. And he did that beautifully to win by a Takcomi. So he’s one away from Kachikoshi with a 7-3 record. 4-6 now due a slap down. Hataki ki popular win. Now the first of our bouts of the day. It’s Takanosho and Asakolyu. Asakoru trying to get his first kachikoshi in the top division. Seven and two takes on Takosho. The pusher thruster. I feel you. Bang. Sako taken straight back and straight out by Takenosho with a thrust out win. Skiidashi a fair amount of experience on the right side of the dojo today. And Takenosho now at 6 and four. No Kachikoshi for Asaki. He’ll have to try again tomorrow. And he’s seven and three. Nice thrust out win for Takosho. nice and pure. Starts with a two- arm thrust, forces with the right hand, moves forward well, and then gets that big thrust at the edge. So, Russio taking him on for the first time. All relatively new for him in the top division. Shishi and Nishki step up. Shishi having a terrible time of it, troubled by that thigh injury. not wearing the bandage though the last couple of days. His movement was much better on the Doho yesterday. Both on losing streaks. Nishkiki five and four. Shishi one and eight. Kind of a soft touchy eye. Shishi’s retreating but he still manages to get a hand in and under and thrust with the left hand. Is he okay? A little disheveled. Hopefully no injury concern. Oh, he’s moving freely which is great. Well, there it is. The second win for him. Two and eight the magazine 11. Nishkigi drops to five and five. He wins by Tukio toshi thrust down. The migos hitter 16. Kaio steps up now against Onatu. First time meeting in the top division. They both went to the same university, a year apart. This man was a year ahead of Onatsu. Nippon Sports Science University push a thruster on the right. He gets in and under though deep with the left hand. Had a Mazashi double inside grip, but loses that. Now Oratu has his favorite grip. Left hand outside, solid, right hand inside. Moves forward, controls the bout to the edge and wins by Yuri Kitty. So he’s six and four. Drops Kaio the rookie to four and six. Seen each other in university days. First time meeting in the top division. Once again his favorite grip when he gets it. It’s hard to beat. Kimzan and Roger. Both men are six and three. Bit of history here. Mashida eight. Mashida 14. Good attack by Kim Bozan trying to grab the arm and pulling it. There was Roger. Taken back again. Then he pulls the other arm and this time with success. So he pulled the left first time, the right the second time and he wins by Okuri Dashi setting it up for a rear push out. So he’s one away from Kachi Koshi now. Drops Kim Bosan to six and four. Stepping up. Another man in trouble. Churumi 1 and eight takes on Endo 5 and four. Six losses in a row for that man. Having a real tough tournament. Mazida 7 going okay. Endo Mashid 11 five and four. They’ve met four times and Churumi’s got the edge. Three to one. Trying to look for an inside grip is Endo. Now inside this time is Chironi and he moves forward with a good pushing thrusting attack and he wins by Oshidashi. So just his second win he stops that run of losses and Endo even now at five and five. Well denied Endo his inside grip. Cherumi with his oske and pushing attack kept him away from a moashi grip. Now he starts a pushing attack under the armpits. Gets to the arms and keeps up the forward movement. Shai or mirror records. Shai three and six or six and three. Now they’ve met four times and Shai’s won just one of them. This man’s pretty hot of late. Four wins in a row. His 100th top division bout today. Looking for the left hand inside. Shodai. He loses that grip. Kept away by Oshama who snaps him on the back of the neck. Gets to the rear and another rear push out win. Okuri Dashi. So his 100th top division bout was a good one and five straight wins to go seven and three and drop Shai to three and seven. Now we check out Tobisu and Messi. They met 15 times in the top division and this man’s won 10 of them, but he’s up against me today who’s got three straight wins in this tournament to get to six and three. Toby Zaru five and four. Straight on sumo today from me. Not his favorite grip. He likes left hand in, right hand out. It’s the other way around, but it doesn’t matter. He controls the bout start to finish. And you would think he had the dominant rivalry in their head-to-head. So that’s four straight wins for him to go seven and three. And Tobyu now even at five and five. It’s a Yikitti win for me. wasn’t much trouble. Denied his inside left. Toby Zaru says, “Well, I’ve got it covered now, but not at all.” All may say, Chio Sharma and Midori Fuji. Both men having tough tournaments. One way tougher than the other. Chio Sharma trying to avoid Makoshi. Two and seven. Midori Fuji 0 and N. His worst record in his career. Fast away and fast down was Chio Sharma. A little inashi move. Not Hankka but step to the right. He took a bit of the hit from Chio Sharma. Automatically slaps him from the right with a thrust down. He ends up winning by Tsuki toshi. So win number one. Yay. Well done, Midori Fuji. Unfortunately for Chio Shama, he’s got Makushi as well. But that must be some relief for the man for Migama. You wouldn’t know though. Well, maybe. Takuji and Tamawashi. Can this runabouts stop today for Takuji? The wheels have fallen off. started with three wins then six straight losses takes on veteran Tamashi who’s the same score at three and six bang in hard and fast Takuji left hand deep moves forward well and bounces back to finally win to go four and six he has a bit of support in the house drops to three and an abundance of towels waving and waving and cheering on Ted Deuji who finally picks up a win. It’s not your runabouts dominated that start to finish. We take a look at Abi and Wakamaharu. The history does favor Abby. He’s five and four. Wakamoto, his opponent at four and five. We know what Abi’s going to bring. Two arm thrust. Straight forward. Takes Wakamoto back, but he rallies back, lunges forward, gets pulled on the arm, and out he goes by that pulling technique. Hikotoshi Wakamoto. too much momentum and it didn’t take much for Abby just to grab the arm and help him on his way. So Abby six and four, Michael Moaru drops to four and six. Massage the face, chin, neck, but he did come back hard and fast. But it was the footwork and the balance that went arry. Another man at the very top of the ranks, Magashuda one oho really struggling. Six losses in a row. He’s three and six. Takes on Gonoyama who’s worse at two and seven. But the one thing about Oho, he’s never beaten Gonoyama in three previous pusher thruster. Both men are good at pushing and thrusting. And the thrusting starts well for Gonoyama. Now a thrust back by Oho. He’s got it working now, but he retreats. He gets taken back by Gonoyama and taken down Oshi Taoshi. The final push down win and another loss for Oho. Well, here’s a man that was in a US show chance in January and now he’s in big trouble at three and seven. Both men the same score. Stepping up Hadumi and Takayasu. Mashetta three and a Komasubi. The Mashetta three is a three and six. And Takayyasu today he’s trying to avoid Makoshi. Well, here’s another man that was in a Yu playoff and now is struggling. Low hit by Hidumi thrusting both men. Out of whack is Takayyasu and moving forward well. will hit and that means win number four and unfortunately for Takayasu the Komasubi he’s going to take a bit of a drop in the ranks he’s makoshi two and eight on day 10 sumo can be cruel how quickly things can turn thrust out win good movement by he’s taken back briefly he pulls on the arms comes that gets Takiasu off balance. Then he starts to retreat and going backwards. No control. The speed across the dojo by Hiadoomi follows up well for that thrust out win. Look how quickly the footwork comes to play for Hiadoomi as Takayasu on the run. Second of our bounce of the day. And it’s a beauty. Wakataga Kag and Aishki. Wakataga Kag angry with himself that he didn’t get Kachio yesterday. The Komasubi will be taking on the Mashida nine for the first time and there’s a lot to light about Aishki. So fresh to Sumo and looking so solid. He’s eight and one. Wakataga Kag the Komasubi. finish trying to get inside Makataga Kag pushed and kept away with thrusting by Aliski. Standing his ground well inside grip moves to the rear, retreats and pulls the kataskashi. Excellent footwork at the edge by Waka Tag. Not only did he have to go backwards, but then quickly realize he was right on the toata, the rice bale, and then arc his retreat as he pulled the throw in and under with a grip to win by undershoulder swing down to get Kachi Koshi. Both men are eight and two. Good start by both and good attacking here by Alnishi to keep him away. But very quickly does Wakataka Kag get in and under with the right arm. And there’s the kataskashi. Watch the footwork at the edge. Make sure he doesn’t step out. Excellent work by Wakataga Kag. And credit to Alishki for putting up some very spirited subo. But today it’s a loss. Just his second of the tournament at Mashida 9. And he’ll have a tough last few days taking on more of the top rankers with this good score. The third of our bouts of the day, Haku Oho takes on Dho. And this is a first time meeting. The Mashidita 7 Haku Oho meets Dio for the first time with an 8-1 record. And the Seekwake is at 6 and three. He’s been exciting, but he’s going to be up against a very spirited pusher thruster and a veteran Dio Hakoho will try and negate that powerful thrusting attack and take it from there. In hard Hakuo, but pounded straight back Dio and takes him out quickly with a skidashi win. Bang bang drops Haku oho to 8 and2 and Dio now one away from Kachik Kushi at seven and three. Here’s a man that’s hoping to get to the rank of Ozaki. He needs a strong finish. He needs to pretty much win them all the way home to set it up for the next tournament. He needed 13 wins to get the unofficial number of 33 over three tournaments. He’s going to be one shy of that, but who knows? They might be looking for a new Ozeki sooner rather than later. Ichamoto and Onoato. Well, can anyone stop this man mountain? Onosato. He has lost to Ichabamoto once, but it was in Jurio and it was 2023 September the Yakibasho. The last time they met was the previous tournament. Onos won. Push a thrust to Ichamoto. Onos could do anything. Big hit by Ichamoto, but he’s taken sideways. Taken back. Taken out and down. Oshi Taoshi a little hesitant at the tachi was Onoat. Maybe he was just waiting to see what itchyamoto was going to bring, but not as fluid as he has been most of this tournament, but still dominant in the end. Perfect record, 10 straight. His best is 11 straight and he does it today with a little bit more effort than usual. But look at that excellent sideways movement. He’s got very good left or right movement. Lateral movement is a big man. It’s hard to do. Cotto Zakura and Koshima meet here. Both men six and three. Six and three. Kot Zakura doesn’t have a good number against his opponent today. They’ve met 17 six 16 times and he’s only won four of them. In quickly with a left hand is Koshima. Now a right shallow grip, but he loses that as Kotto Zaka gets a solid left in him, grabs the arm and tries to retreat. Now he moves forward. He needs to keep doing that. Kotto Zakura Kirishima using the Otske with his right hand. And now he lifts up. Does the Ozeki? And that makes him high. And that how many times do we say if you try to win going backwards, especially when someone is in really tight like Koshima was, invariably it’s a loss. And that’s how it turned out for Kot Zakura. Kushima picks up his seventh win. Went down heavily yesterday. now wearing the the bandage on the face. Got terrible grays in his win yesterday in a close one, but today really twoing and throwing here in the middle of the dojo. Both men trying to get a a grip that could be dominant. He went Makai, changed positions, but the movement there by the Ozaki was to stop that moashi grip for Kushima. But here’s the mistake coming up. He’s got the left arm of Koshishima to Cotto Zakura and then he raises him up and then Koshima just comes in tighter. He moves in tighter. He tries a pivot and he’s out. Yikitty. It’s the final bout here of day 10. And well, we’ve got a handful of men almost with chasing our sole leader. And if the Yokazuna can win here, he will maintain his two loss record. Udo with his 400th top division bout today. He’s got a good record against Oshori. They’ve met 13 times. He’s won six hard and low. The Okazuna keeps a close watch on Ura. Chases him across the dojo and hunts him down for an old Kuridashi. Quite a few rear push out wins today. No joy for Ur as he has a Makoshi 2 and eight. It’s Kachi Koshi for the Yokazuna and he stays with that two loss group which got a bit larger today as a result of some losses by those in the Yusha race. Good way to finish the day. He’s in a good vein of form is the Yokazuna. Injuryfree this time round and following his opponent very carefully to get the win. So there is completion of a bouts for day 10 and the leaderboard looks different. Onoos has a two bout buffer over his nearest rivals Horu Wakataga Kag Hakuho and Alishki. Can he go all the way? Well, let’s find out as each and every day is going to be exciting. Come back tomorrow and see how day 11 turns out as you join us for more Grand Sumo Highlights. ski with Aqua concludes our program.
