GRAND SUMO: Day 14 of the May 2025 Tournament – GRAND SUMO Highlights
Hello and thank you for joining us on Grand Sumo Highlights. It’s day 14 of the May tournament at the Ryo Kokuan in Tokyo. This man, Ozaki Onos, has been untouchable this contest and sealed his fourth title yesterday after smothering his counterpart Kotto Zakura. Nobody has ever stamped the deal on day 13 in his Tsunati attempt. He’s now set to elevate to the top spot next week after official approval and become the 75th Yokozuna. But before that, let’s see if he can go and get a spotless 15-0 record. We head into Makunoji action with Loa. Seven wins, six losses, clashing with Nishki, who has a 6-7 record. Loa triumphed in both their meetings so far last year. He’s now trying to shake off a three bout losing streak. Nishkigi trying to prevent a Makoshi losing record this tournament. In a little faster with the Mitsu grip is Loa. Roga right hand inside looking to be in command. Nishki trying to stay in contention but has no more real estate. Loga gets the job done and notches his eighth victory for a Kachoshi and he snaps his three bout losing streak. We now move to Savanomi 9 and4 versus Koto. Six wins, two losses, and five days sidelineed. Their clashes in the top division is divided five to five. Equali left hand outside grip for Sadanomi. He uses that for that impeccable throw, winning by Nag overarm throw. Swift veteran Sadani goes to 10 wins, four losses for the first time in three years in the top division. Next, it’s Tokihay six and seven taking on Endo 8 and five. This is the first time meeting between Hidar men. Both looking for left hand inside, right hand outside position. Endo now on a threebound winning streak. Endo tries to get that right hand. No, it’s Tokiate. Look at Toki Hayate using his speed over the veteran getting the job done in an instant. So Toki Hayate prevents going into Mak Koshi here on day 14. He improves the seven and seven and he’ll look for a Kachkushi on day 15. Checking the replay. Left hand in for Endo, but Tokihay circling around well. Uses that right hand outside to win by Yoriki. It’s Shishi. Three wins, 10 losses against Tamasho 4 and N. Shishi the Ukrainian goes up against Tamasho the Mongolian for the very first time in the top division. The last time they met was in September last year down in the Jurro division. Shishi won that one. Tried to get a hold of his opponent. Look at Shishi taking command and winning there byaki. Slap down. Shishi unable to capture Tamaso. Well, but he wins by Kamacho is in lower. Wants to raise Shishi. Shishi using both hands. Well, hits and slaps him down. Here’s a bout we’re focusing on in the first half of action. It’s Shinu Makaman Kaio going up against me. Kao is now at seven wins, six losses. Meay at eight and five. He already got his kachoshi yesterday. Kaio strives to attain a kachoshi in his top tier debut. Kaio slips to the left. He leaps to the left. Now he goes for a pushing thrusting move. But look at me. moving around well around the dojoho at the end he slips to the right gets that outside grip and wins by nag may say observing the man in goal really well he goes to nine and five so Kaio seven and seven he’ll look for his kachoshi tomorrow jumping after The tati me startled but stays relaxed and makes sure he keeps Kaio right in front of him. They clash again. They separate but me knows where he is on the dohoyo. That’s why he grabs that right hand outside for the guat. It’s Shodai 4 and nine versusai three and 10. It’s a first time meeting here. Thai struggling with nine losses in a row from day five. Shai put an end to his four bout losing streak yesterday. In lower with both hands is the man in navy he can’t finish off Shai and Shai shows his perseverance and hits that Kyotoi at the edge. Shodai achieves win number five. Here’s another first time meeting. It’s Atami Fuji taking on Aishki. Atami Fuji looking for his Kachkoshi. Aishki looking for his 10th victory this tournament. The Ukrainian here drove out Hakuo yesterday by Yodiki in a 21-year-old matchup. He faces a 22year-old today. Aishki trying to get inside Atami’s kitchen. He gets that right hand inside position. Atami trying to lock Aishki up. They both losing balance there, but Aishki stays in a lower position. Atami Fuji throws in the towel. A Nishki spectacular performance here today to take care of Atami Fuji. What about? So, Atami Fuji drops the seven and seven. And now Nishki prevails. He jumps to 10 wins, four losses. Using both hands is Aishki and trying his best to stay in a lower position, but Atami Fuji locks him up there with the left. And he keeps that right hand in to stay in contention. Look at that. Aishki almost losing his balance, but he uses all these different moves to stay in contention. We have Midori Fuji 4 and N going up against Uden 5 and 8. Here’s a battle of neighbors straddling Mount Fuji. This man from Shizoka Prefecture, Nuden from Yamanashi. Duden getting the better of the Tachi. But look at agile Midori Fuji just before losing real estate. Midori Fuji slips to the right and hits that skitoshi thrust down. Midori Fuji on fire. Five bout winning streak for him after losing his first nine bouts. Here’s another clash that’s noteworthy in the first half. It’s Asakoru 9 and4 versus Uno with the same record. Both looking for their 10th victory this tournament. Their history divided one apiece. Who will attain doubledigit record this tournament shifting to the left? Asakor but Katu catches him. Katu trying to get a good hold of Asakor but look at Asakoru. Nice pivot and uses that underarm to execute the nag underarm throw. So Asaka Cordu moves up to 10 and four. Great switching of gears by Asakoru after stepping to the left in the Tachi. He goes in thrusting away but Ono Katsu catches him there with the right and has that left hand in but can’t make good use of that and Asakori hits the nag. Next it’s Kim Bosan 8 and5 versus Takanosho with the same record. Their history favors Kim Bosan just slightly 3-2. Kim Bzan is from Kazakhstan. He took their last two meetings. Takanosho had a sigh of relief after reaching Kachikoshi yesterday. Now the left hand outside grip for Kim Bzan. Takanosho in trouble. He’s now too high. Kim Bzan double hand attack after the Tati and after that captures Takanosho. So Kim Bzan scores his ninth victory of the tournament with that oshidashi frontal push out. We have Chiranomi 3 and 10 struggling versus another struggling man Shaanomi 4 and N. Chiranomi leads their faceoffs in this top Makunoji division by a slim 2 to1 margin. Shooting out a little bit lower is the man from Okinawa, but he goes down. Shan Noi shows good defense after the initial charge and hits that slap down to take care of Chidanomi. Chonanomi improves to five and nine. Shiridanomi was in a little bit lower in the Tati. Good angle, but it’s a hidden pull attack by Shaan Nomi. Shiranomi can’t get his favorite left hand frontal grip. So, he thrusts away, but Shaan Nomi strikes. It’s Uda 3 and 10 going up against the Iron Man Kamawashi 5 and 8. Their history favors Tamawashi six-3. So this is their 10th time meeting. Trying to snuggle in as always. Hamashi saying no way. And look at that relentless attack by the Iron Man. But he loses balance. The man in pink. Now they separate. Wrestling going on here. And an inside position for Udra. Uda victorious with that Yodi Kitty victory. He does get into Tamashi’s kitchen at the end and escorts him out. Both popular Dikishi on the dojo. They love it when Nifty Uda gets the victory. Uda improves to four wins. Checking the replay here. Tamoashi totally rejects Ura after the Tati. So he thrusts away. Nice nooa throat thrusts, but Uda breaks his balance right there. Now back dead center. Uda waits for that timing and he gets inside. double hand inside and wins by Yorikiri. Next up, it’s Tobisu’s six wins, seven losses, fighting Abi seven and six. Abi has the upper hand in their history, 8 to5 in the top division. Tobaru needs to deliver back-to-back wins for a chance for Kachkoshi in May. In low is Kobizaru, but an unusual touchi by Abi. They get into grapples. Look at Abby trying to get a hold of Kobizaru. But Kobaru just keeps on moving and out goes Abby. Oshidashi victory for Kobizaru. So both men go to seven wins, seven losses and both will head into Senaku looking for a kachoshi left and outside grip for Abi. The typical pusher thruster. He wants to make sure he catches Tobizaru, but Tobaru moves around. Good pivot and Tobaru strikes. Wins by Oshidashi. It’s now Gyama versus Ichyama. Both with four wins, nine losses. Their rivalry, it’s split one apiece. It was Gonoyama taking their last meeting, which was last November. He won by Oshidashi. The first Ichyama won by Hitoshi hand pull down. And right after the initial charge, Yamamoto absorbs Goyama and takes him down by a quick hand pull down Hyotoi maneuver. Shakes off his five bout losing tunnel and he improves to five and nine. Quick hidden pool attempt. It’s Oshima 8 and five versus Wakamoto 6 and seven. The history here favors Wakamoto taking uh both their meetings so far by Oshidashi frontal push out. Oshoma had a six- win run earlier but now has backto-back setbacks. Wakamu can’t get his favorite inside left hand. Oshoma doing a great job deflecting. Osha in trouble but circles around really well. Now he kind of sees the side of Wakamoto and pushes him out. Oshoma shoves out Wakamoto at the end and hands him his eighth setback of the tournament. So Wakamoto Koshi moves up to nine wins, five losses. Wants to dig that left hand inside, but Oshama knows that. So he moves around really well. Great lower body movement. He knows exactly where he is on the dojo. And he pushes out Wakamaru. Let’s go to Oh, five and eight versus Tedu Fuji with the same record. Here’s a first time meeting of pusher thrusters who are also great at using the Oske forearm attack. Both had a disastrous losing streak in the middle of this Natsubasho and hence both have losing records. Nice 180 right after the Tati. Left hand outside position for Takiru Fuji. But reversing the field is Oho. Oh, had a lackluster performance. Six wins, nine losses as a Seiwake last tournament. But now he goes to six wins this tournament as a one. Slap in the face by Fuji. He gets that outside grip with the right left hand as well, but Oho is able to use his sheer power there to reverse the field. Squeag beltless arm throw at the edge. Soho improving to six wins, eight losses. It’s Chio 4 and nine going up against Takayasu also four and nine. Their history in the top division favors Takayasu 723. He beat Takayasu in their last two meetings. Leaping to the right, but catching him is Takayasu. Takayasu didn’t really do much and it looks like Chio stepped out. That’s a fumidashi non-technique rear step out for Chio and Takayasu gets the victory. Quick victory for Takayasu. He tries to get a hold of Chio, but he didn’t really need to do much because Chio’s left foot was out. Jumping to the right. Chio can’t get that outside grip. Then as he tries to get something done, his left foot steps out. Let’s move to Waka Takag. 10 wins, three losses versus Hiadomi six and seven. Wakatak aims to rack up a win or two for the remainder of the tournament to get on the path toward his future ozi promotion. 10 wins now. Can he get 11 and then 12? Hiomi looking to prevent a Makoshi. Nice sharp tachi by both menag at the end. Shovs out Hiadi. Oshidashi victory for Wakataken. That’s win number 11i on the left. Unfortunately, that’s a losing record for this tournament. So, Wakatak dominates in his rivalry with Hiomi and this tournament. He’ll be looking for his 12th victory tomorrow on day 15. Great sharp angle in the tati. He raises Hiadomi who has no response. Nice from the left by Wakatak. Then he breaks his balance. Says bye-bye. Next, it’s Kirishima 10 and3 fighting Haku Oho 8 and five in this first time meeting. Hakuo is fighting at his personal high rank of Mashtra 7 and is desperate to stop his four bout losing streak here. Kirishima is looking to step back up to Ozeki soon. He’s at 10 wins. Nice high by both men. Both prefer the left and inside. The youngster on the left trying to take care of the former Ozak here. He can’t get that outside grip with the right. Kirishima knows the 21-year-old is fast and furious. He keeps that left hand in deep. Wants to get something done with the right. Kirishima a single strand on that mashi but circles around and hits the skitoshi at the edge. Hakuo fighting the higher rankers in the home stretch now drops the five bout losing streak and this man Kirishima he scores victory number 11 and extends his winning streak to six. A lot of poise shown here by the former ozi Kirishima. Good hit by Hakuho to take back Kirishima. Both get into that hidarot position that they like, but Hakoho not able to get that right hand outside. He allows uh Kirishima to get that deep left and inside position despite having a single strand there. Kirishima moves back and hits with the left. Striking from the left by Skitoshi thrust down. Now to the highlight match of the day. It’s DO 9 and four taking on 13 wins. spotless. He’s already claimed his fourth Yu show. Checking the rivalry, it’s Onoato dominating six to one. Looking really sharp. He’s been unstoppable this whole tournament. Will it be DO? The Seiwake who will put a damper on his usual record this tournament. Disho eager to snatch his 10th victory. He wants to get on his ozi promotion path too. He lowers Daisho taking back the ozi but Onosato reverses the field here. He collapses but takes out DO in the process. The winner is crystal clear. It’s this manos. He renews his personal high consecutive winning record to 14 from opening day. So one more victory for in this tournament that’ll be just really dominant. He can’t get that right hand inside immediately. He goes for the hatakcomi slap down. It’s taken back, but he immediately recovers. Great moving around the dojo onto wins by Oshidashi. Staying unblenmished. We bring day 14 to a close with these top dogs. 8 and five. locks horns with Soul Yokoza Horu with 10 wins, three losses. They both entered the top tier in 2020 and their history here favors 13-7 here. The final bout of the day can’t get that outside grip immediately. Zakura gets that left hand outside grip. It’s shaken off by Hoo. Great job by the Yokosa. Double hand inside position for Kyu, but he can’t finish off Koto Zakura. Koto Zakar tries a Kotag from the right and left. He fails and it’s Hor winning by Yikitti frontal force outu gave out two Kimoshi gold stars to rank and files in the first week, but he’s regrouped well. He goes to 11 wins. this tournament. I’ll show you full of concentration. He gets that double hand inside position. No grip on the mawashi. And as Koto Zakura tries to swing him around first from the right and then from the left by Kotagu stays tight and wins by Yori Kitty. Make sure you watch Grand Sumo live on Sunday the 25th for the final day of Doscoy action in this Natsu bash show.
