Thai, Cambodian militaries agree to ease border tensionsーNHK WORLD-JAPAN NEWS

Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to withdraw their troops from the site on the disputed border where the two sides exchanged fire on Wednesday. One Cambodian soldier was killed in the incident. Both countries army chiefs met on Thursday and expressed condolences over the death. They also agreed to seek a peaceful resolution to the issue. Thai defense officials say all troops on both sides have already left the area where the incident occurred. The clash took place along the border between Thailand’s northeastern province and Cambodia’s northern province. Cambodian troops say they were conducting a patrol when they came under fire. Thai officials, however, claimed they tried to talk before the com Cambodians started shooting. The territorial dispute between the two nations spiked after a temple in the border area was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2008. Tensions have eased in recent years and officials stressed Wednesday’s clash was accidental. China has used a foreign minister’s meeting to pledge its continued support for the Pacific Island nations on climate change. The two-day summit took place in Xiamen in southeast China’s Fujian province. It was attended by Chinese Foreign Minister Wangi and representatives from 11 Pacific Island countries including Kiribas, the Solomon Islands, and NU. They issued a joint statement indicating their commitment to strengthening trade relations. It also recognizes the vulnerability of the Pacific island countries to climate change and says China will assist in their response to the issue within its capabilities. The meeting comes as American cuts to foreign aid programs and the threat of trade tariffs fuel global uncertainty. The US president has also signed an executive order to leave the Paris agreement on global warming. Beijing apparently intends to strengthen its influence in the region by stressing its contrast with the US. And that wraps up our bulletin. I’m Trati Kalan in Bangkok.
