Mount Fuji has officially opened for climbing season, with new regulations to contend with the iconic peak’s growing popularity. Hikers trekking from the Yamanashi Prefecture side—which opened on July 1—now have to pay 4,000 yen each, or about $28. The entrance gate to the trail is closed from 2 p.m. until 3 a.m. for those without mountain hut reservations, while the daily number of climbers is capped at 4,000 people. The trails on the Shizuoka Prefecture side will open on July 10, and climbing season runs until September 10.
