Inhabitants of a remote island in southwestern Japan are being evacuated after a 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck. The strong tremor rocked Akusekijima on July 3, registering an intensity of lower 6 on the country’s scale of zero to 7. The Japan Meteorological Agency says this is the highest intensity ever recorded in Toshima Village. More than 1,000 notable tremors have been observed in the island chain over the past two weeks.
