Foreign ministers express concern over trade at East Asia SummitーNHK WORLD-JAPAN NEWS

Southeast Asian foreign ministers met with other regional powers on Friday in Kula Lumpur for the East Asia Summit. It’s part of the Austin meeting hosted by this year’s chair Malaysia. The country’s foreign minister made opening remarks calling for stronger coordination. Two decades later, the East Asia summit stands more relevant and vital than ever. Today’s world faces a complex web of crisis that jeopardize global peace, shared prosperity and well-being of people everywhere. Foreign ministers from nations including Japan, the US, China, and Russia also attended. The chairman’s draft statement obtained by NHK shows countries expressed concerns over rising global trade tensions and more uncertainty in the international economic landscape. But some officials told NHK that they made no direct reference to US tariff policies. Diplomatic sources say the ministers also exchanged views on Beijing’s growing presence in the South China Sea and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The Philippines is marking nine years since an international tribunal dismissed China’s territorial claims in the South China Sea. Manila and Beijing have been locked in a long-standing dispute over the waters. People in Manila are celebrating the anniversary. In 2016, the permanent court of arbitration in the H ruled China had infringed on the Philippines fishing rights in the waters. Ambassadors from at least 11 countries, including Japan and the US, attended an event on Friday, showing support for the Philippines. The foreign secretary of the Philippines condemned China, saying it persists with illegal, coercive, and aggressive actions. nine years hence, its legitimacy continues to be tested, challenged, and subverted, putting not only the Philippine maritime interests in peril, but also the regional stability and prosperity we are all working so hard to achieve. She said the countries can navigate through obstacles together as they defend the rules-based order in the maritime domain. Beijing has rejected the 2016 ruling and continued to flex its muscles in the South China Sea. Last year, it unilaterally revised its territorial baselines in what was seen as an attempt to consolidate its control over the area. And that wraps up our bulletin. I’m Tira Alsan in Bangkok.
