GRAND SUMO: Day 10 of the July 2025 Tournament – GRAND SUMO Highlights

[Music] [Music] Hello once again. Welcome to Grand Sumo Highlights. It’s day 10 of the Nagoya Bash Show from the IG Arena. And what a tournament we have. What a leaderboard we have. Led by that man, Ichi Yamamoto leads the way. He’s got a one bout buffer over a big group chasing him. Can he keep going? The leaderboard has Ono Sato, Kittishima, Aishki, Tamawashi, Kuseno, Kotto, and Mitakayumi won off the pace. Who’s going to take this tournament victory? I’m not sure if they’re looking at the leaderboard, but they’re looking at the sumo. They’re interested. So are we. So let’s get to the action. We kick off with Mitakumi and Shaani. Mitakumi, one of our two lost men taking on a Jurio man, former top division competitor. Takumi g shown some strength moving forward so far. Shauni doing okay. He’s six and three at Jurio 2. Nice inward position. Left hand deep by Mitakumi moves forward takes Shauni to the edge and wins Kachi Koshi. The first Kachi Koshi in seven tournaments in the top division. May last year was the last time the Mashidita 16 now got eight wins or more and he stays one off the pace now. Another man looking for Kachi Kushi. Mashidita 15 299 career wins. Takes on Chironi five and four. He’s got the edge four to three and they’re headto-head. Good hit by Kotto. Drives Churumi back who rallies back into the middle of the dog. Gets a thrusting attack going but Kotto’s giving as good as he’s getting and powering inside to Churomi. Chironi bounces back, goes one way, then the other. Kotto retreats, gets to the side, wins. Kachi Koshi. Unbelievable movement by Kotto Shoh. The old story about winning going backwards. Normally we don’t recommend it, but he wins by beltless arm throw. Sku nag for Kot. Win number eight. had a bit of everything this bout. Lots of twoing and throwing with the thrusting attacks. Kotto Shoo better on the Moashi than Chironomi, but they never really got into a Moashi battle. Just pounding away with thrusts and push and eventually pulling attempt. He moves forward though. That’s a good but moving back. That’s not good. But gets to the side and wins. That’s good. on the dojo cotto ao cotto’s brother takes on midori fuji [Music] four and five the mashida 17 midori fuji his sixth 100th career bout five and four first time meeting quickly inside with the right hand and the left double inside grip for midori big left hand outside coto needs to be careful can try leg trips leg sweeps I don’t know if he’s in a position to do his famous kataskashi and no positioning from the right hand with Kotojo. So he’s in an awkward position and lower now is Midori Fuji. Midori Fuji has the ascendancy here as terms of body positioning but in sumo anything can happen on a particular day. He tries the outside leg trip that doesn’t work. Tries the throw that doesn’t work. Tries it again it does work. Midori Fuji start win number six and now Cotto Ajo dropping to four and six. Bit of an early hole with five days to go for him. 600th career bout was a good one for Midori Fuji. Two men struggling in the tournament. Asu and Kao. Asakoru two and seven. Kaio already a maki koshi. Now as you is normally speedy. Kaio kind of defensive as any sumo. I’d like to see him move forward more quickly inside but not a big hit by Asa. And poor footwork and he is just taken down with a slap by Kroi Kaio. So they’re both two and eight, both losing records on the dojo now. Shishi and Takosho mirror records. I’d like to see him keep his feet flat on the dojo. He’s working on his toes too much when he goes forward. Takosho looking okay at six and three. only met once before. Takenosho was the winner. In hard and fast Takeno, right hand deep, left hand in an awkward position, a little high is Shishi. Takeno buries his head into the chest of Shishi. All the weight on Takosho here. He retreats for a throw. Shishi. And whilst the attempt was brave, the timing probably not great because his opponent was right in close. And all Takosho had to do was go with him. And he did. Moves forward well when he gets the chance. Now watch the retreat here by Shishi. He pulls. He pushes there and then he pulls. tries the overarm throw. Down he goes. Very close at the edge. And this is going to be reviewed. Although the Gilji gave the Goombai to Shishi, there was a mono e that his body was thrown out of the ring first. And upon our review, we confirmed it was likely so. Therefore, we now reverse the decision. The official winner is Takosho. Yeah, he’s uh he was airborne and Takenosho still had his feet on the doillo. So he wins now. Tokihayate and Hideni. Four and five. Toki Hayate first time meeting in the top division. They’ve got history in Jurio. Still looking for win number one. Hidenumi coming back from the injury. Tokihayate has won four of their five meetings in Jurio. Moves forward well. Tokiate but slipping to the side and pulling the arm and Hadumi gets on the board. Day 10, his first win. It’ll be well a kind of a sweet taste you would hope for him. Tokihayate now is four and six. [Applause] Fujino and Atami Fuji. First time meeting. Both men are six and three. Two very different styles here. He needs to absorb the attack. Atami Fuji and then go on the attack. Fujiwa has got a great touchy eye and great lateral movement. Hits in fast. Gets an inside grip with the right hand. Grabbing that arm is Atami Fuji. Tries to control it. Left hand outside grip for Fuji Nokawa. moving forward. The foot goes out. Yeah, he went out first. I don’t think Atami Fuji knew that as he swung him around the left foot of Fujinoa. Went over the rice bail and once again disheveled. He’s cpped a whack in the eye. He hurt his neck on the opening day where Kata puts his hand in the air suggesting he needs help. I don’t know if he hit his head or hit his hip, but once again banged around isawa who stands up and goes back to the dojo. Let’s hope he’s checked out, but it’s a win for a Tommy Fuji. Picks up win number seven drops to six and four. Hope that’s not a concussion, but I didn’t see where he landed. We might see it in the replay or it might be out of camera shot. Good fight back here from a Tommy Fuji. You know takes him one way then the other. Tommy Fuji now to step forward and gets in really tight. There goes the foot out and down he goes. Do we get to see how he landed or is it going to be cut short in the vision here now on the dojo rookie Kuseno takes on Ura. And I wonder what Kuseno is thinking. He’s thinking he’d like to win because he needs Kachi Kushoshi in his debut. He takes on the unpredictable Ura who’s six and three. What’s the plan if there is one with Ura hard and fast both men thrusting away is Kuseno. He takes UA to the edge but he fights back, retreats, gets lower, tries to pull on the arm of Kuseno. Kuseno keeps pounding away, gets him to the edge and down he goes. Oh, Kuryashi. Bit of a handful was Ura for Kuseno, but there’s Kachi Koshi. So, he stays on that second peg on the leaderboard. Will it be the top peg? That all depends what happens with Ichiamamoto later in the program. Well, he kept up the punishment. Did Kuseno kept thrusting didn’t allow Ur to go low on most occasions but when he retreated he gets away here and then he as he gets to side up he fronts him and then tries to go low very low tries to grab the leg but pushed away by Kuseno. Constant movement by Ura Kuseno keeping in front of him keeps him right there and gets to the rear and wins by Okuri Dashi. How do you feel about getting your win in your first tournament? Just feel relieved. What do you think the accomplishment means? Is it a splendid outcome? I think it’s because I’ve been able to push forward every day. You have elder veterans in your stable who’ve done excellent accomplishments in their first top division. Well, I haven’t reached their level yet, but I’ll try to get there. So, what are your next goals? Double digit wins. That’s what I’m looking for now. Congratulations again. Thanks very much. Kachi Koshi in his debut. Shai and Sadumi. Now, five and four Shai. Sadumi trying to avoid Makoshi. They met eight times. Shai has won five of them. He is just a little off in this tournament. Sarumi his footwork not quite what it can be. Body slam both men deep with the left but beautiful maneuver by Shai. Satani lunges forward. Little pivot and it’s Guinag beltless arm throw by Shai to pick up his sixth win and a makikoshi for the veteran Sonumi. Two and eight. Roger and Tak Fuji. Roger five and four as is Takad Fuji. Roger’s been moving quite well. Mashida 10. Takuji troubled by that bicep injury, but he says he’s going to continue. Big hit Takaruji. Nice outside grip. Roger. Roger solid here. He’s got a good position and uses it. Aatag once again troubled by the injury. Little grimace from Ted Fuji. And it’s win number six for Roger. Drops Takuji. Even now at five and five. The overarm throw for Roger. [Applause] Goroyama takes on Chioa. Goroyama five and four. Chioa the only winless man in the top division coming off surgery we believe prior to the tournament again on his back. Chio he tries to get the outside grip with the right. Can’t do it yet. Goroyama’s got a right hand outside grip. He’s not normally known these days for his moashi technique. more of a pusher thruster taken to the edge tries a pivot throw does but Goroyama uses the right to winag [Applause] so that’s win number six for him double digits in losses determined to keep fighting through the tournament no taping that we can see but he has had a couple of operations on that back now me taking on the tournament leader, Ichi Yamamoto. Me 3 and six. Itchyamoto 8 and one. There is a problem for him though. Well, I don’t know if it is yet, but he’s never beaten me in the past. Three timesamoto has lost all of them to this man. In hard and fast may trying to extend with his thrust isamoto. He does get going now. And down goes Meay. Wow. I don’t know how many people had Ichiamamoto as their tip for a win of the US show. I don’t know if anyone had him winning and leading after 10 days, but he is nine and one. He beats me for the first time. And itamoto the Mashida 8 still leads the way and wins by Oshihi frontal push down. He gets some extension here now. And that has me in trouble going back. Good footwork by Ichyamoto. Down goes Meay. Now Tobaru and Hakuo. Tobyandu is struggling at three and six taking on Haku oho who’s had two big wins of the last two days. Five and four for him. They’ve met three times and Haku oho has won them all. Can Tobiadu spring an upset in soft really? No big hit by either man. He retreats to Zadu. One armed bonsai position and out he goes. Yeah, it all looked pretty matterof fact the whole bout. Hako didn’t come in with any real gusto, but still got the position he wanted from the Tachi to pick up his sixth win. And Tobiizadu in danger now at 3 and seven. We now have Kim Bosan and Aishki. Kim Bosan coming off that big win yesterday against the Ozaki takes on a man he’s beaten twice in two meetings going for Kachi Kushi. What a surprise performance. Well, not a surprise, but an outstanding performance. I was expecting he’d do well. Alsi, but he’s doing really well. Thrusting attack from Kimbo’s arm, but that doesn’t last long. Just grabbing the arm. Also, grabs the wrist. and gets Kachi Koshi on day 10. The Mashida won and he’s only got Men Shira rank file and file members to go. No more top rankers left for him. So he’s got an easy run home successful Kachoshi won. Congratulations. Thank you. Your opponent came rushing today really hard with a party techniques. Yeah, my sumo today wasn’t so good, but Makachoshi meant a lot to me. You’ve been matching up with all the top rankers this B show. How do you evaluate your sumo so far? Well, so far so good because I’ve been able to show some aggressive sumo. So, what are the goals for the remaining days? I’ll just focus on each bout every day. That’s all I need to do on the clay now. Wakamoto not having the greatest of tournaments takes on three and six. The Mashia 3 meets Wakamotaru for the first time. Wakamotaru is retreating too much in this tournament. I don’t know why he needs to move forward. Good hit. Both men trying the left hand inside. That’s what he wants. Wakamaru. He now retreats trying to slap down on Akatu. That takes him to the edge. Now he moves forward but in an awkward position. He lost his left hand inside grip. I don’t know why he gave it up. Wakamoto I mentioned prior to the bout he’s retreating too much. He’s doing it again now. Trying a kotagatu is in tight and he wins. Well the misery continues for Wakamoto and Makoshi here on day 10. Andu now four and six. No thought of injury coming from the the camp from Wakamoto. Just the sumo’s not working for him. Sometimes it happens. We now look our attention to Abi and Oshoma. Abby five and four. O the Shin Komasubi try to avoid Makoshi. They’ve met once before and uh Oshama was the winner. So Abby trying to even the ledger here needs more fighting spirit. This man good face slap by Abby trying to upset the concentration of all Sharma. Takes him to the edge. Can’t get rid of him there. Tries again. Gets it done for the second time. And ashidashi win for Abby to pick up his sixth win. A Makikoshi losing tournament for the Shin Kasubi. He won’t be in Sanyaku next tournament. Takayasu. The Kasubi takes on Magida 2. Oho. Looked good before the tournament in training. Looking good during the tournament. Six and three. Takes on Oh. He’s had a big win in the tournament, but his record’s poor. Three and six and poor against Takayasu. Never beaten him in five beatings. The shoulder blast by Takayasu taken back. Slap down attempt by Oho. Takayasu wants the left hand inside. Thrusting away at Oho. Takes him to the edge. Can’t finish him off. Oho slips to the side. Keeps up the pressure. Now he’s inside with a grip, but this won’t favor him. He prefers pushing and thrusting. Takayasu’s got a left hand in but he wants the right hand outside if he gets that. Oho’s in tr he’s got it now. Oho could be in trouble. He can’t recover from here and Takayyasu wins by Yori Kitty. Win number seven one away from Kachoshi and six straight wins against Oho. wasn’t totally fluid, but he was good enough when he got into an awkward position to bounce back. Now the do Kirishima Hiradumi. Kirishima trying to stay in the US race taking on Hiadumi. He’s seven and two. Trying to forget that loss from yesterday and Hiadooi 5-4. They’ve met seven times. Koshima’s won four of them. Big hit by Koshima. He’s got an awkward position, but he grabs the arm and now he tries to thrust. A leg trip attempt by Koshima. Gets in tight and wins. Yorioshi. Well, it all happened so quickly there. And a lot happened in that time. Awkward positioning for Koshima with the arm grab that he had. Then he tried that quick leg sweep. Then he got in tight. There’s the forearm blast. Tries to get the left in. And that gets blocked by Hiomi. Hiomi goes to Maki Kai. Doesn’t get it. A bit of a leg sweep attempt there. A slap moving forward now. Retaliating is Kirishima. Gets in tight. Takes him down and out. Wakataga Kag takes on the Ozaki. Kotto Zakur. So not fighting 100%. That’s guaranteed. Five and four. Wakatag the second wake also five and four. His 600th career bout. History favors Kottoakura just in low and tight. Waka Tag right hand deep. Ozeki nothing with the right but he has a left hand shallow. tries to left that outside grip. Now gets the right hand inside. Tries to go Maki Kai. Changing from outside to in grip. Doesn’t work. Big push of the chest by Wakataga Kag on Kot Zakura. Takes him one way then the other. That’s only a one strand grip by Kotto Zakura. Whereas Wakataga Kag has the two or three strands on the moashi of Kot Zakura takes him to the edge now takes him tinkering on the brink fights back the ozaki and some nice applause from the fans for his efforts. Now Wakataga Kag got the head buried in the chest of Cotto Zakura. He can utilize this position by dropping the hips, bending the knees and using the head. No movement as yet from Wakataga Kag. No movement. Kazak and now Wakataga Kag tries to squeeze. Still got that head buried there. He hasn’t utilized it to my eye. Now he lowers the body. Now he lowers the head and uses it. Bell. Thank you. Wakataga Kag win number six. Three losses in a row for the Ozaki to drop to five and five. Not a good number after 10 days for an Ozeki. Wakata Kag doing okay. Six and four. Yikitti win. The second of our bouts of the day. It’s a beauty. The Okazuna Onosato takes on veteran Tamawashi. They’re on the leaderboard at the top of the day. One of them still will be. But in second place, we had one leading, seven chasing. We have one leading right now, and it will be six chasing. Which one will it be? They met three times. Ono Sato’s won all three. They’re both seven and two, but Tamawashi does have seven career Kimoshi, beating a Yokazuno as a rank and Filer goes in solid, gets blocked by Olos, who moves forward. Now Tamawashi goes one way then the other and takes him down and wins ups it. Oh, the man who turns 41 this year just beat the Shiny Yokauna and the Zabaton fly. Eight wins. Kachikoshi for Tamawashi. Onosato drops to seven and three. And he beats Ono for the first time. What a way to finish day 10. A thrust down win for Tamawashi. The winning move here is he goes one way there and then he goes the other. upsets the balance of Onos. Onos was pressing forward, but the movement by the veteran was outstanding. He kept saying, “You died again to Kimboshi, wouldn’t you, Bashio?” How do you feel now? Actually, I feel wonderful. Were you aware you the oldest rickshie to gain a gold star? No, I wasn’t aware of that at all. Well, today that was a big day for you. How do you prepare yourself for the bout? Well, I just simply want to enjoy the moments. That’s what I tried to do. Well, we enjoyed the moment, too. That’s the leaderboard. One cut from the leaderboard, and that’s the Shin Yokozuna. Throw a dart because that’s about the only way you’re going to pick the winner from here. It could be Alishki. He’s got the best run home. Remains to be seen. What an exciting day, Sumo. It will continue, I’m sure. Come back tomorrow for more Grand Sumo highlights.
