Cambodia is stepping up criticism of Thailand, accusing it of launching air strikes near a historic Hindu temple that both countries have long disputed. Cambodia says the attacks violate international law and damage the Previer Temple. The site dates back more than 1,000 years. It became a flash point after it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2008. Following the latest hostilities, fellow Austin member Malaysia has stepped in as peacemaker. The country chairs the block this year. Prime Minister Anoir Ibrahim says he spoke with the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia on Thursday evening. He’s calling for an immediate ceasefire and dialogue. Turning to the Philippines, the Supreme Court has struck down impeachment articles against Vice President Sarah Duterte, ruling they were unconstitutional. The lower house impeached Duterte in February, accusing her of threatening to kill President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and of misusing public funds. Duterte, daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte, denies the allegations. The Senate Impeachment Court had been expected to convene as early as next month, but on Friday, the Supreme Court unanimously declared the impeachment unconstitutional while stressing it was not absolving to Terte of the charges. Her defense team welcomed the decision, saying it upheld the rule of law. The ruling could boost Duterte’s political ambitions, including a possible run for president in 2028. Typhoon K made landfall in the northern Philippine island of Luzon late Thursday, compounding more than a week of bad weather and causing dozens of deaths. The Philippines deep into the rainy season is now dealing with widespread damage after days of relentless rain capped by the typhoon. Officials say continuous downpours triggered landslides and flash floods, killing at least 25 people and leaving eight missing. More than 3.8 million residents have been affected with some forced to seek shelter in the Capitol Manila. Some homes were flooded and schools and traffic were disrupted. We couldn’t salvage any of our belongings because everything was submerged. Our washing machine, our bed, our rice cooker, all our clothes were submerged. We couldn’t save much. KO may weak into a tropical storm as it moved away from Luzon, but rain continues across much of the country and the government remains on high alert. And that wraps up our bulletin.
